F@H Worked for +/- 2 weeks, Now hangs and won't run?

I am very much a rookie, so I apologize in advance!

Computer Specs: i7 960 with an AMD HD6670.
Network Connection: Very fast Cable, no proxy.
Operating System: Windows 7 What distro/version? IDK, sorry! Latest patches applied? I check and apply updates daily
Overclocked?: Stock Dell.
Stable?: Never, ever had an issue. And again, F@H was working great for a while with no changes I know of before disaster struck.
Software: What version of the client are you using? 7.4.4 (I hope that's right). Remember that Beta and prerelease versions can be unstable. What version of the core(s) are you using? IDK
WU details: Gromacs, DGromacs, SMP, GPU? What WU? Run/Clone/Gen. IDK what this even means. sorry!

I have the program set to run only when idle @ medium. It worked fine for a couple weeks and then the other day I walked by and didn't hear the PC whirling away. I moved the mouse and the "thinking circle" icon for Windows popped up. After 30 seconds of that I hit ESC and my desktop appeared. There was a Windows error message but now when I just tried to replicate it the error message disappeared before I could read it. Something about an error and Windows will let me know when they find a solution to the issue. I know, not a great description, but it is what I have for now.

If I wasn't so passionate about this cause I would just give up, but I really am passionate about this and I appreciate your help in helping me more than I can express. Thanks so much to any and all help.

The "New Member Start Here" post says to post the log if appropriate. It is sure long, so I hope this is the right thing to do. Apologies for breaking any formalities or rules here, I am trying very hard to provide what is requested. Thank you so much again!

UPDATE: Actually, I can't post the log. Since I am new and it is my first post and first day, there is some sort of link in the log that prevents me from adding it. I will try to add it in a minute or PM it to anyone that is kind enough to request it.

Welcome!

Yes, if in doubt, post the whole log (in code tags). Sometimes you need to prune it to fit the message limit -- be sure to include the stuff at the start and any error messages, but remove repetitions and complete successful units.

If you still can't post it PM me with it (if that works) -- but I won't be up much longer tonight.

Welcome to foldingforum.org, R.Ludt, and congratulations on composing a really good start toward debugging your problem.

If there was a windows error, even if you can't read the message, windows should have put and entry in it's "Event Log" which can be found in Control Panel under Administrative Tools.

Run, Clone, Gen (along with Project) are the identifiers that uniquely identify the Work Unit that was assigned to you. In the log, you'll see something like:
12:12:50:WU01:FS00:0x17:Project: 13000 (Run 222, Clone 1, Gen 37)
(where all of the numbers are probably different).

Most of the information will be found in the log, whether you know what all the questions mean or not. If, after trimming out the unneceswsary parts per davidcoton's instructions, you still can't post it, you can email it to me and I'll post the important segments for you. My email is in a Private Message to you.

Oh heck, the Windows error! I forgot to mention that I did catch the Windows error message, it reads:

FAHScreensaver.scr has stopped working

A problem caused the program to stop working correctly.
Windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available.

OK, so the screensaver -- which triggers work on idle -- seems to have crashed. Try rebooting to see if that fixes it. If the screensaver crashes again we'll have to dig deeper.

I would go one further and have you disable the FAH screensaver. By looking at the log, the screensaver engaged and crashed many times. Just set the display to power down after 5 or 10 minutes of being idle and that will trigger the client to fold.

Thanks so much. I should have added that many, many restarts had already taken place to no avail during this past week of issues and before my original post.

I have just now set my screensaver to "Blank" and to start after 5 minutes of inactivity (as opposed to FAH Screensaver I previously had it set to, same time delay). I hope this does the trick.

Thank you again. It feels so nice to know I am helping (in a small capacity) to fighting these diseases and I actually get sad every time I walk in and see the PC hung up and not "working away". I'll be happy to have the issue resolved.

The fah screensaver is nice to look at, but in the end, displaying those images actually takes resources away from the GPU, so the GPU slot would be folding slower. And that may be where the conflict was to cause it not to run.

I still do not believe it is kicking on, I never hear the PC spooled up. Below is the log lately, hope this helps.

As has been the case since my last post, the F@H screensaver is not selected and the "Blank" Windows screensaver is and is set to be active after 5 minutes. The PC is not set to ever fall asleep under any circumstances.

The PC should not sleep or folding will stop. As mentioned above, the monitor does need to sleep to trigger idle folding.

The PC has always been set to never sleep, as was the monitor. I have now turned the screen to turn off after 10 minutes (sleep and go "Blank" after 5 minutes), although I was hoping to avoid that. I will see what that does. Thanks again for the guidance!

The above mentioned setting has proved fruitful! The machine now kicks on and appears to be running, though having to turn on the screen each time I need it (this is a work-from-home PC and I am always on call and needing to access it) is something I had wanted to avoid but if it is required I can live with it (I hope).

A couple of recommendations -- although you should evaluate them carefully in terms of using your computer for work at any time.

First, I would remove the "idle=true" setting (or changing it to false) for the CPU slot (slot 0). Your i7 is a pretty powerful CPU and FahCore_a3 or FahCore_a4 runs at a very low priority, so it is my guess that allowing the CPU to fold while you're using the computer will not cause a noticeable change in your foreground activities. I predict you will increase your FAH production without any sacrifice to your working activities. Naturally this depends somewhat on what your work entails and you'll have to take objective look at whether CPU-folding is, in fact, noticeable.

Second, after you've accpeted that change, you can try removing the idle=true from your GPU slot. There will be a higher risk of noticeable screen-delays but if foreground performance is still acceptable, you'll increase your FAH throughput even more. Only you can be the judge of whether you can still work "normally" with FAH continuing to fold, but it's worth testing.

Today when I woke up I heard the PC buzzing along and the screen off when I approached. When I wiggled the mouse nothing happened. I hit ESC, Cntrl Alt Delete, all manner of things to no avail (including turning the monitor on/off). The screen would flicker a little, showing the desktop for very brief glimpses, but it was fuzzy and lots of static. Then all went black again and stayed that way (monitor was on as I saw "No Input" on it). I had to press and hold the power button to get it to shut off, then restart and all was well. When I came home from working in the field it had been idle another 5-6 hours and it awoke just fine but I do not rtecall hearing the PC working wither. I will monitor and report.
