Radeon HD 6950 - Could not get assignment

Hi,

I'm completely new to folding and I've been having some success with my Core i5 4670K, but pretty much no luck whatsoever with my Radeon HD 6950. When I first configured my GPU slot, it accepted an assignment, but the estimated time to delivery was well beyond the given timeout. I tried adding the

Code: Select all

client-type advanced
in the expert settings for the slot, but now it doesn't seem to be able to retrieve any assignments, even if I remove that expert config option.

Reading the documentation and forum posts, I understand that folding with an AMD GPU on Linux is a problematic area, so I'm happy to accept that my GPU might not be worth persevering with, however I thought it was worth asking.

The logs for the GPU slot repeatedly output this message:

Code: Select all

14:37:22:WU00:FS01:Connecting to 171.67.108.201:80
14:37:23:WARNING:WU00:FS01:Failed to get assignment from '171.67.108.201:80': Empty work server assignment
14:37:23:WU00:FS01:Connecting to 171.67.108.204:80
14:38:29:WARNING:WU00:FS01:Failed to get assignment from '171.67.108.204:80': 10002: Received short response, expected 272 bytes, got 0
14:38:29:ERROR:WU00:FS01:Exception: Could not get an assignment
This look like it's simply an issue with the slot not picking up any work from the upstream servers, but somebody here can probably explain it better to me. I looked at the server status report and this doesn't event mention the two IPs that my GPU slot seems to be polling for work, so I wondered if the system had got stuck trying to work with stale assignment server IPs?

My relevant specs are:

- Asus Maximus VI Hero
- Intel Core-i5 4670K (stock clock speeds)
- 16GB system memory
- Sapphire Radeon HD 6950
- Fedora 20 x86_64
- FAHClient 7.4.4

PG has released new Assignment Server code last week, there have been issues that they are working on. That may be the cause of your not receiving work for your GPU. There are multiple topics connected with the problems related to the new server code. As for the two AS connections you showed, a change in the server status page over the Summer removed the AS and CS entries from the list. Now it just shows work servers.

Hopefully once the AS problems are sorted out you will get work assigned to your GPU. In case it is not related to the AS changes, could you post the beginning of your log that shows client version information, system information, and the configuration for the client. Also what version of the drivers are you using?

Finally, if you do get a GPU WU, it does take several percent progress before the client will give good ETA figures. If you have not done a project before, the client also has no history to use for the estimates, and it can take additional time for the ETA to settle down to an accurate figure. I believe your 6950 is fast enough to complete current Core_17 WU's, perhaps someone else with one will comment on their experience.

Thanks for the reply!

Yes, patience was all that was needed to start getting WUs for my 6950. The ETA is a bit worrying: 13.5 days! Well past the expiration date (10/10/14). It's only chewed through 2.86% though, so maybe that value will decrease a bit. The estimated PPD when the GPU slot started was around 5K, now it's dropped to approx 500!

I'll keep an eye on it and see if it will pick up speed and report back my findings.

Folding is unlikely to "pick up speed" unless your system was temporarily loaded with some other process when was temporary. What WILL change is the accuracy of the estimated speed Initial estimates are based on insufficient data, and as additional data is gathered, the estimation process becomes more accurate.

By looking at the log and entering the time differences of a representative frame into the calculator http://www.linuxforge.net/bonuscalc2.php you can extrapolate more accurate values sooner after a new WU starts.

It has been a few days since my AMD/ATI GPU(HD7970) has been able to get an assignment in Linux but was folding without problems previous to that. It is still able to get work if I switch to Windows.

PG has been notified of the situation.

What clocks have you set? I'll put the same gpu for folding next days :)
