Following the instruction both auto install and manual install fails. The client is not installing as one would expect.

Try using the GDebi package installer. It seems to work well as shown in the Linux install guide.

sudo apt-get install gdebi

That worked this time. That is how I tried to install it initially and it failed. Weird.....
Mint 16 64bit.

Worked fine except even on the "light" setiing it pushed both Core temps up from 52C to 86C!!!
As 90C is CRITICAL for this machine, and I live in Brisbane AND it is a cold winter at the moment
I think I had better use the Web interface lest I smoke this little beast!

On what kind of system, processor? When was the last time you cleaned out the dust from the filters and heat sinks?

So it is a pretty small *NIX development box. Handles Apache, ORACLE, mySQL, postgreSQL OK.

I turned of the nifty 3D graphics and that only dropped the temp by 1-2C

I clean the outside daily and the inside weekly!

This machine also cooks when I play a FLASH game on it, so I wasn't surprised. I looked at my system monitor and core 1 was stuck on 100% usage, and cores 2,3 and 4 where bouncong between 80-99% (when I had the 3D thing running at the same time that is). So like I said it didn't come as a surprise. I have a program I wrote that monitors the sensors and tails the results to a fixed term window just for this reason.

Run on fewer CPU cores to lower temps.

Some laptops cooling systems are just not good enough to fold upon. While I think folding is a good cause, it is not worth destroying the machine by cooking it.

That being said, you can control the number of CPU threads used by simply configuring the CPU slot. If 4 is too much, try 2. You won't be as productive, but something is better than nothing.

I think the slot was 0 - I never touched the configuration defaults. Like I said, this machine can cook itself playing a FLASH Hidden Object game! So Folding warming it comes as no surprize. I'll find a gruntier box for the packages and keep this beast folding on the web interface.

I fold on my laptop under Linux Mint. Heat is a problem, regardless of the OS. Laptop's just can't cool themselves like desktops can.

The solutions include, in order: dedusting the fan and insides of the machine, elevating the laptop using bottle caps or empty rolls of electrical tape, exposing the fan assembly, or replacing the thermal paste. If all of these fail, run F@h with less sources, as 7im suggested.

Mine already has the under-arse panels ripped off and it is sitting in a three fan blower!

I think it is just the machine, not the folding software as such.

I'll get the client working again on a gruntier machine. I had an account in 2002 that used to run on my Pentium!

I'd bet you'd have the same problem if you had any other software that fully utilized your CPU, your GPU, or both. F@h does try to make good use of hardware, but sometimes that can be a stress factor, especially in laptops. I'll bet if you ran some other hardware stress tests you'd get a better diagnosis as to whether F@h is to blame here or not.

Ta! Like I said, I know this machine cooks itself on playing FLASH! Hidden Object games! Not exactly high intensity gaming stuff! In between LONG hours coding PHP, Perl, CSS, HTML, SQL I played some Farm game and my cores screamed up to 88C!!!

So no, no blame, this machine is just not cut out for the task.
