I'm sad about this because I got a lot of mileage out of my ps3 client

As I understand it, Sony 'needed' the room for patches so reused the Space in firmware. Not a F@H decision.

Hadn't heard that. Got a link to that info? I'll add it to PS3 FAQ.

Sorry, while I see others call it bloatware, I can find no 'reason' by either Sony or Pande Group.

Moore's law states that the speed of the typical computer doubles every 1.5 years. Unfortunately Moore's law doesn't apply to game consoles. Whatever games were available when you bought your PS3 will still function just as they always have.

Compared to the the increases in GPUs and CPUs performance, the PS3 has been left far behind. Stanford depends on that progressive increase on the typical @home PC.

It wasn't productive any more, and if the researcher using the PS3 data finished his/her research, there was no point in continuing it. FAH does not send out work units just to keep clients busy with busy work.

... and before you ask, there's no information available about whether FAH/Sony will develop a PS4 client or not. Development work continues for the PC platform (CPU and GPU) and for the Chrome browser (and possibly for other unannounced software).
