Project 8900 problems

Hello!

I have been folding on my laptop without any problems for a while now, but for the last 3 days the GPU was unable to fold anything from Project 8900, only getting error:FAULTY every time.

I searched around these forums and the internet trying to find solutions but none seem to have helped.

Computer specs: i7-2670QM @ 2.2Ghz (all 8 cores), 8GB RAM, AMD Radeon HD 6770M (although HP suggests HD 7690M XT, which is a renamed version of 6770M)
Network: DSL
OS: Win7-64 bit SP1
I use stock, so no overclocking. FaH is stable.
Software v7.3.6, core 17. Says -version 703 so I guess you want that too.

The GPU itself is fine. Not overclocked, not overheated, no memory problems, has no problems running anything else. The log attached shows that both client-type normal and advanced have both failed.

WUnit details:

What Video driver version are you running?

Welcome to the folding@home support forum IsraeliRD.

What version of graphic drivers are you using? Core 17 does require fairly recent drivers that support OpenCL.

What options did you use when installing the folding software? It looks like it's installed for 'everyone'. Have you tried installing it 'just for you' after a complete uninstall including data? You would want to set your cpu slot to 'Finish' before trying this. While you're waiting for it to finish you can pause your gpu slot to avoid further failures.

Does your GPU run FAHBench successfully? (pause both your slots while running this)

I pressed the CPU to finish, I'm going to guess it's going to finish the WU it's been given, which has ~13 hours on it left.

According to GPU-Z, I run atiumdag 8.8882.2.3000 (released 30th Sept 2011).

FAHBenchmark says clSetKernelArg for both Explicit and Implicit Solvents.
It does identify the CPU properly, but the GPU(?) is called 'Turks'.

I used GPU Caps and it says the GPU uses OpenCL 1.1, Turks compute units: 6@725MHz... guessing that's where the Turks on FAHBenchmark comes from.

Those drivers look a bit old for core 17. First, check the HP support site for their latest graphic drivers. if none are available then go to amd and download/install the latest drivers for your graphics card ... latest released appear to be 13.9 dated 9/18/2013. If you do end up having to use the ones from AMD please read that page carefully before downloading and installing. There are some computers that are not compatible with those drivers listed near the bottom of the page.

Yes I have been wondering whether I should be updating the drivers. HP of course does not show new updates. The laptop I use has switchable graphics which means the drivers do not work. In the future (v13.11 drivers) it appears they will have switchable graphics update so I might get that, but for the meantime I am a bit hesitant on installing 13.9.

When was Core 17 rolled out? iirc just this Monday and definitely last week I had no problems. Is there a different core/project I could use the AMD card on because it'd be a shame to be stuck on the CPU only.

All GPU folding is very dependent on drivers for functionality. Staying current is helpful.

Core 17 has been in testing for quite a while now, then released to advanced months ago and made full public a week ago. No, core 17 is replacing all the older GPU cores. You can read about in on the new blog on the fah web site.

I don't dispute what you're saying, but shouldn't the policy be that core 17 is replacing earlier cores WHEN IT'S READY? Core 17 works fine, but only for the latest class of gpus.

You seem to be closely associated with the whitelisting of gpus so maybe you can point me to an official statement about which gpus are being deprecated (or give me some advanced information). I have both new and old (but supported) gpus. I've had real trouble being assigned wus that either won't start or are so terribly slow that they cannot meet the (final) deadline. Judging by some examples described by other fah participants on the forum, I am not alone. What is going to be done?

I really don't know. I sympathize with the lower-end GPU's and the GPU part-timers especially with the v7 pause-on-idle default setting. There are no good alternatives for these folders. The issue was brought up before Core_17 moved to general release but, I think the lack of of Core_11, and Core_15/16 WU's precipitated the need to move forward with Core_17 regardless.

PG is aware of the issue, see the end of the blog post on Core_16 end of life - http://folding.stanford.edu/home/core16 ... d-of-life/:
One outstanding issue for Core17 is that while it has much greater performance for most AMD GPUs, it has been reported that PPD is slower for 5xxx class AMD GPUs. We have been brainstorming fixes for this issue internally, but we have no solution for improving this unfortunately. We are continuing to discuss this internally to see what we can do.
What and when that internal discussion results in for different types of work, only time will tell. That is an announcement that many are waiting on.

I installed the Catalyst drivers 13.11 Beta 9.2 since starting 13.11 it appears AMD supports the AMD Mobility Radeon series, especially for switchable graphics. Unfortunately at the end of the install it "installed" the drivers yet the Catalyst Control Center couldn't find any drivers and thus did not launch. Had to uninstall it and revert back to the original drivers (which I'll finish installation of tomorrow).

FAHBench also reports some exe failure so it couldn't even do explicit/implicit solvents, but it did detect the CPU but not the 'turks' part.
It is interesting to note that PG says 5xxx class AMD GPUs are having issues when I have 7690M XT, so for all intents and purposes it SHOULD work. Core17 definitely seems to be problematic, or it has used C17 just fine but Project 8900 causes the problems. Either way I can't point a finger at anything since I don't have logs from a week ago :)

On my home machine my GTX 660 Ti still uses Core 15 for the WUs, hasn't reached C17. Guess that one will have to do for now. Thanks for the help :)

The issues with the 5000 series AMD-ATI cards mostly are with the lower end cards and completing the currently available Core_17 projects within the deadlines, not their ability to run the WU's. The 5800 cards can complete within the deadlines. I had no problems at all running Core_17 on my son's Mac Pro booted into Windows 7 and equipped with a 5870 card. Persons with 5600 and lower cards report they can not complete within the deadlines, the changeover point appears to be in the low end 5700 cards.

Edit: This is also an issue for the lower end cards in the 6000 and 7000 series, exactly where in the lineups a cards performance is not enough to complete Core_17 within deadlines is still being determined by some folders.

Drivers for all GPU cards have been an ongoing issue, and not just with Core_17. In the case of AMD-ATI cards, with Core_16 any driver past 12.8 was found to have issues. Some people hacked installs so they would use the Open_CL support SDK from 12.8 with newer drivers and got past most of the issues. But in the process they found it was necessary to remove all traces of installs of higher version drivers or they would have setups that did not work.

Hello again, I have some news after playing for a week now with FAH and GPU drivers.

- I have installed the AMD 13.11 Beta V9.2 MOD Driver as the official ones did not function
- The latest drivers from Intel for the HD3000 made my entire screen red (thank god I could still ctrl+a the text and figure out where I am)
- Since installing the MOD Driver (everything on laptop seems to be fine), GPU Caps and GPU-Z did not complain about missing OpenCL, instead now upgrading status to OpenCL 1.2 (OpenCL 1.2 AMD-APP (1348.4) FULL_PROFILE)

FAH meanwhile finished its last CPU folding, so I could uninstall it and re-install using express installation. The CPU had no problems and the GPU itself did not die after a few minutes, giving me home.
However after 15 minutes of waiting and nothing but the CPU showing progress, I decided to quit FAH and restart and see where the GPU is, and it ended up still being on 0 steps.
This time around I opened GPU-Z and see whatsup with the GPU, and found it at an extreme 98 degrees Celsius.

I have now paused the GPU again and have been contemplating of uninstalling the latest drivers and going back to defaults (no MOD drivers either, thought I can assure you guys they do work). However before I do I think we could go ahead and debug this problem further and see whether this GPU/comp should be blacklisted for FAH or it's something that can be fixed.

Image below shows part of the log as well as GPU-Z temp control.

I had also decided to run FAHBench. Besides AVG complaining on a virus when it started itself up, I got the following error messages:
Error compiling kernel: "C:\Users\AJAX\AppData\Local\Temp\OCL7343.tmp.cl", line 14: warning: OpenCL
extension is now part of core
#pragma OPENCL EXTENSION cl_khr_fp64 : enable
^

Internal Error: Storing X86 DLL failed!

Codegen phase failed compilation.

extension is now part of core
#pragma OPENCL EXTENSION cl_khr_fp64 : enable
^

Internal Error: Storing X86 DLL failed!

Codegen phase failed compilation.
These error messages occur whether AVG is enabled or disabled.

Thanks!

Officially, the Intel GPUs and their drivers are not supported. During the development of FahCore_17, it was suggested that the Intel implementation of OpenCL still has too many bugs to be seriously considered yet. We'd certainly like to hear if you are successful in testing them, but don't be disappointed if they continue to fail.

The OpenCL drivers supplied as part of either the AMD or NV drivers seem to be more mature.
