Radeon HD7770

I know this thread is a year old, but my 7770 is making no progress although it says it is running. Can anyone help with this or should this be posted elsewhere?

Welcome to the forum.

First, could you post your folding log file? Please include the beginning section with version and system information as well as the folding configuration. Also, what version of the Catalyst drivers do you have installed on the system.

One other thing to mention, the default settings of version 7.3.6 of F@H only uses the GPU for folding when the system is idle. With Windows that would be either when the FAH screensaver activates or when the system shuts down the screen. Putting the slider to Full will start GPU folding even when the system is not idle, but you may experience some lag in displaying other events on the screen.

I am using FAH version 7.3.6 and the slider is always on "full".

I can't figure out how to post a screen shot :oops: so...

That appears to be catalyst v13.4, which is new enough to be supported by fah.

What does the log say after this...

The log has nothing else in it.
I can't copy/paste from the "system, info"tab and don't know how to post a screen shot.

Just above the log file there are some check boxe filters: "slot", "unit" "warning and errors"
I had the "slot" box checked to see just slot 00, my GPU. When I unchecked it I got what you wanted. I thought you meant the TABS above that: "status" "system info" and "log"
I was referring to this "system info" tab when I said I can't cut/paste from it.

The latest version of Catalyst known to work well with Core_16 GPU projects is 12.8. Persons have managed to get newer versions to work by using custom installs of the newer driver and using the older OpenCL support from 12.8. There are discussions of that in the forum for Problems with AMD / ATI Drivers. Without the custom install, some versions later than 12.8 have been reported to run slowly using only a fraction of the GPU power or not work at all.

An alternative to processing Core_16 WU's is to add the parameter client-type advanced to your GPU folding slot. This may get you some recently moved from beta status Core_17 WU's. There are only a few projects so far using that core so far, and they also are requested by systems with nVidia cards, so using the advanced setting is no guarantee of getting Core_17 WU's. But they usually work better with the newer Catalyst driver installation.

@Joe: So you think this is an AMD driver issue and if I rolled back my drivers to 12.8 it would work?

I don't know how to do any of the other stuff involving custom installs and modifying OpenCL, but I might be able to figure out a driver rollback, lol

To save a lot of heartache before rolling back your drivers, use a driver cleaner before installing the new older driver. Many people before you have had problems GPU folding when they didn't. Without the driver cleaner, you end up with mixed file versions typically messing up OpenCL which is required for folding with AMD GPU's.

The other thing to watch is the minimum version of Catalyst required for your GPU. As a more recent model, the HD 7770 may require a newer version than 12.8.

This part bothers me. Either (A) you've been editing your configuration and have created something that couldn't exist or (B) altering drivers has removed and/or added GPUs, or (C) some other strange set of changes preceded the beginning of this log. We don't really need to analyze and explain the most recent set of changes as long as you have something that's working to your satisfaction.

I also notice that slot 0 is after slot 1 in the configuration. That's unusual but shouldn't cause any errors unless you try to fix it.

@ Joe, I'm not sure what the minimum version of Catalyst is, but I'll see what I can dredge up.

@ Bruce, I have uninstalled and installed the GPU slot numerous times. Before I plan on doing the driver "update", I will actually uninstall and then reinstall FAH.

On that note, I was once able to get the GPU to fold by going under the configure tab>>advanced>>clicking :disable highly optimized code" and clicking "try to lock cores to a specific CPU"
It worked for one work unit then the CPU also wouldn't download a WU, so I got rid of that.

The other option I thought of is on my HTPC I have an older version of FAH that has no problems folding the GPU but that's an Nvidea card.

The setting for optimized code is essentially non-functional. It only applies to FahCore_78 so it doesn't matter what you set it to.

I've heard recently that locking cores to a specific CPU doesn't work either but it's certain that any changes it might make will be minimal.

Neither of these settings have anything to do with the assignment of new WUs. That leaves "we don't know" as the only logical explanation for the troubles you had downloading a new WU.

OK, so I uninstalled my CCC.

I reinstalled Catalyst version 12.8

I then unistalled FAH and reinstalled it hoping it would autodetect my GPU but it detected 2 CPUs instead, so I deleted slot 01 and added my GPU while only allowing the CPU 7 threads, leaving one for GPU.
It started folding and then said FAILED.
I deleted the slot and re-added it again and it started folding then FAILED again!
