Been trying to fold for years..

Post by NeoCzar »

This is the straw that broke the camel's back. For 4 years now on 3 different platforms in 5 different countries I've tried to fold, and have failed miserably tanks to the same problem: The program just sits there after installation. It never downloads any data from the servers and it doesn't do any work. Tried every patch, every fix, every setting, and it just sits there. The firewall/router seem to be configured correctly and the assignment servers give me the "OK".

Anyway,

Code: Select all

Welcome to the F@H Forum NeoCzar,

Really sorry to hear that you had multiple issues while attempting to run F@H. Hopefully, we can figure out what your issue is and solve it. Generally speaking, the V7 software is pretty easy to setup and has worked very well across standard setups.

By chance, are you:
1) Using any antivirus/firewall program? If so, have you allowed F@H?
2) Are you using IPv6?
3) Can you successfully open these sites in your web browser:
A) http://assign-gpu.stanford.edu/
B) http://assign4.stanford.edu/
C) http://assign3.stanford.edu:8080/
D) http://171.64.65.104:8080/
E) http://171.67.108.44:8080/
Either a blank white page or a white page with "OK" in back text is the expected response.

From your configuration, it seems that you are not using a passkey, something that is vital to get bonus points once you have qualified on eligible projects. You can find out more information about it from here -> http://folding.stanford.edu/home/faq/faq-passkey/

The network errors in the log indicate your connection attempts to multiple servers at PG are being blocked by either a firewall or other security setup. The first sign of that is the failure to update the GPUs.txt file. Besides the questions PantherX has raised, is your system behind a proxy server? If so you also need to configure the client to connect using the proxy.

Four years of failing to fold, and this is your first post asking for help? Why did you wait so long?

What four countries? As far as I know all countries are online, even China! This was all with the same machine I assume? Because if you had widespread issues on completely different systems and connections then that's indicative of something wrong with F@h. If not, it's more than likely something fixable on your computer. Generally speaking, the software connects just fine.
F@h is now the top computing platform on the planet and nothing unites people like a dedicated fight against a common enemy. This virus affects all of us. Lets end it together.

1- I use MS Security Essentials, I added FAHClient.exe to list of excluded processes. Using windows firewall, client among exclusions as well.
2- Isn't that something the ISP decides? I live in Qatar, it has fairly modern providers and equipment, I guess so. Most internet traffic is still IPV4 though, so what does it matter?
3-
A- OK
B- OK
C- OK
D, E, F, G all give blank screens. What now?

After installing BOINC (but not running it, I still need to restart computer), removing and adding FAHClient.exe to MS security exclusions just to be sure, and connecting/disconnecting a tunneling service (hotspotshield), it seems to be "running" now, in the sense the CPU's fan is at max speed, its % is 100 in the task manager. The GPU is quiet and dead (As it shows in MSI afterburner), even after I added it as a "high performance" application in Catalyst, but both GPU and see CPU show as running in green.

Now the "web control" isn't connecting and timing out while the software is running as I can tell from the fan noise. This is the buggiest software I've tried in a long time. I'm sure Stanford can take out a few hundred thousand dollars from its multi-billion alumni fund to design impeccable software.

Edit: Now it's working again. Apparently each "web control" tab/window is tied to one instance of the client running, and you have to exit both and restart the prog for it to function properly, and not just reload the web control page. /sigh ... this is so late 90s programming. GPU still doing nothing.

Your log shows that both (CPU and GPU) got a workunit to fold:

CPU:
04:36:25:WU01:FS01:0xa4:Project: 8704 (Run 86, Clone 7, Gen 1)
04:36:25:WU01:FS01:0xa4:
04:36:25:WU01:FS01:0xa4:Assembly optimizations on if available.
04:36:25:WU01:FS01:0xa4:Entering M.D.

GPU:
04:36:25:WU00:FS00:0x16:Project: 11293 (Run 24, Clone 375, Gen 43)
04:36:25:WU00:FS00:0x16:
04:36:25:WU00:FS00:0x16:Assembly optimizations on if available.
04:36:25:WU00:FS00:0x16:Entering M.D.

Now you only need to be patient to see the progress of both WU´s.

What version of Catalyst do you use?

And if you don't like web control don't use it. Use the advanced control from the system tray.

There's progress on the CPU WU, still none on the GPU, and MSI afterburner shows GPU util as 0%, temp as 50, and core MHz as 300/ Memory clock as 150MHz which is strange because those are very low values. Usually it's either off (using iGPU) or at full 850/1400 speeds. CCC/drivers is 13.4 which is the latest stable version.

If the system is configured to use IPv6 over IPv4, it may cause some issues for F@H. You have to tweak the system to ensure that IPv4 is preferred over IPv6. However, this doesn't appear to be the case here.

One possible reason for your GPU to not function properly is that you were assigned a FahCore_16 WU. Generally speaking, it doesn't play well with driver version higher than 12.8. If you want to use the latest WHQL Driver version, you will need to modify the GPU Slot option so that you can be assigned FahCore_17 WUs which are known to work well with the latest drivers and are much more efficient when compared to FahCore_16. In order for you to get FahCore_17, you will have have to do this:
Open Advanced Control (AKA FAHControl) -> Configure -> Slots Tab -> GPU -> Under the Extra slot Options, enter the following:
Name: client-type
Value: advanced
Once saved, exit the FAHClient and go to the data folder (C:/ProgramData/FAHClient/config.xml) and within the work folder, delete the folder named 00 which will delete the FahCore_16 WU from your system. You than restart the FAHClient and hopefully, you will be assigned a FahCore_17 WU if they are available.

Upgrading to driver v13.6 is better than deleting a work unit. Or at least that should be tried first! Deleting a work unit is always the last resort.

The dude above is only speculating on 13.6 (There is no WHQL 13.6, it's a Beta), it's a much worse and unstable ver. than 13.4. I'm not willing to risk BSODs and lower gaming fps to get F@H to work. What's the problem with changing WUs?

Looks like there's no way to fold adequately with 13.4 (or 13.6)
