I just got this in my head:
Folding@home- the best screen-and life-saver, just make the visuals a bit more bloomy and eye catchy and there we have a few more folders in our pockets

What visuals are you talking about? For visuals such as the screensaver, I believe they were designed to be relatively simple, so that the computer doesn't have to render as much and could put more cycles into doing the actual science.

Yeah, the blur would be an overkill for wasting computer resources, but maybe slim wire-frame for connections and smaller bubbles would look quite nice:
