I'm going to resurrect a HP DC7800 mini tower, I had in storage.
It has a Intel Core 2 Duo E8300 Processor.
What version of Linux will get me the best performance? What kernel for it also?
Thanks!
Roger

Very little difference in the lastest releases. Run what you like.
Or wait, because someone else will be along shortly to recommend something specific, and what small percentage it helps.

I think any version of Linux will give you similar FAH performance. I get very good PPD values using Debian v6.0.6 on dual-core AMD Linux systems, as I said
here:

The SMP clients on Linux do seem to be very good, the PPD of the dual-core Linux systems (AMD Athlon II X2 240 and AMD Athlon 7550) sometimes approach the PPD of the quad-core Windows systems (AMD Phenom II X4 955 and AMD Phenom II X4 965), depending on which WUs they get.
Everyone has their favorite Linux, there is a discussion about it
here.

I went with redhat. It's chugging along!
