With this system, I reach 5500 PPD at an average. I first thought this was good, but than I tried the client with my MacBook Pro (Late 2011, Basic 13''-Modell with no upgrades) and got 2500-5000 PPD. I thought this PC will be a lot faster, but appearently it is not. The CPUs always work at 100%, but the GPU always says "Ready" instead of "running". Furthermore I have a lot of free RAM, can I fold faster by using more of it?

Generally I am fascinated by this project, I created a Team and trying to convince some of my friends to join me. :D

You are running in Linux? There is currently no GPU Linux client, although this is definitely on many peoples wish list.
Welcome to the forum and good to see your enthusiasm starting a team, it can be a bit dispiriting trying to encourage people to share your vision, but stick with it you can never tell who might be inspired to share your "intrigue".

Regarding ram usage, F@h will use as much as it needs, no more, so there's no way to tell it to use extra. For regular SMP work, this max is at most around 100 MB, and it's usually more on the order of 50 MB; how it uses much depends on the WU it's crunching. There is a class of projects termed "bigadv" that can use on the order of GB of ram, but they're restricted to machines with at least 16 cores, and again the client will automatically use as much as it needs.

So I could fold a lot more if I installed Windows on my machine? How much faster would it be? Something like a factor 2?

I can get Windows for free from my university, so it would not be a problem.

You will get the GPU slot running, which will account for the most significant boost in work done. I am not sure how much you could expect from a Radeon 5xxx, but I am sure one of the more GPU savvy folders can look into that for you.

As far as SMP goes, my impression has been that it generally runs SLOWER on Windows than Linux, just how much I cannot say.

I have a low-end HD5xxx GPU on a rather old Intel Quad. If I enable the GPU and change SMP:4 to SMP:3 so there's a free CPU to support the GPU, I gain some throughput from the GPU and loose some to the fact that SMP is now slowing to 75% of the previous throughput. The net gain is quite small but it's positive. If I had a high-end HD5xxx, there would be a bigger gain from the GPU and it would certainly be a wise choice. In my case, it's not worth the occasional problems I've had with screen lag. There's no unequivocal answer to what would be best for you without actually testing it on your hardware.

Tpf on my linux machine is generally 10seconds less on my linux rig vs my windows rig. Both rigs have the same cpu's and mobo's. The linux box has the slower RAM.

The PPD difference is anything from 2k to 10k in the linux box's favour
