How do you use F@H? Any specifics?

My first WU was 1500 and after a few days I checked it and it was like 1000+.
Then next time I checked, it was saying it had some errors (I forgot message).
Then the next day I have a new 150 WU and no completed WU’s.
Looking back I was thinking it might have been a firewall blocking it and it gave up and downloaded another WU??? But that’s only a guess.
What happened to the 1500 WU? It just disappeared!

Look in the FAHlog.txt file located in your F@H folder ...

You can post the file here if you don't know how to interpret it ;)

Here is what looks like the 1500 WU. the FAHlog.txt file is modified on April 14... I know I saw it was doing stuff afterward.
And if I had to guess, it looks like this log records the WU process up until 435/1500.
But I'm sure it went over 1000 from pointing my mouse at the gear at process icons.

Is your client running ? do you see a process called FahCore_xx.exe in your task manager ?

Yes my client has been running every time I boot my computer. It takes like 27-29 CPU

Hello Ericson_Mar,
Welcome to the folding forum.
Your log indicates that your FAH client was processing it's first Work Unit beginning April 13th.
[11:16:51] Working on Unit 01 [April 13 11:16:51]
[11:16:52] Project: 3740 (Run 59, Clone 1, Gen 16)

Your log leaves off here...
[12:24:52] Completed 435000 out of 1500000 steps (29)
Can you post the log from that point forward?
Yes my client has been running every time I boot my computer. It takes like 27-29 CPU
FAH will use all available unused CPU resources unless configured to use less than 100%.
Are you running a multi- core CPU?
Please post machine details such as CPU, RAM, OS, and any client configuration details.

Apparently that isn't all of FAHlog.txt. It's certainly not the beginning and it doesn't look lke the end that I'd expect.

Also, search for other copies of FAHlog*.txt that might be elsewhere.

I didn't post anything before the log snippet above because it was all about downloading my first core.
There was nothing after the:
[12:24:52] Completed 435000 out of 1500000 steps (29)

What I'm saying is my FAHlog.txt file has a modified date of April 14. Today is April 21. There is no log for anything since April 14 I guess. There is only one log on my HD.
I did nothing to the client. I just downloaded it and it runs.

OK, I did a search on "non-indexed" files and found a log file that started on 4/18 (below).
Judging from these lines:
[10:56:18] - Core is not present or corrupted.
[10:56:19] - Attempting to download new core...

...I remember I had a blue screen of death a few days ago. Perhaps that somehow blew my first unit away -> Unit 01 [April 13 11:16:51] (I presume a.k.a Protein: p3740_Seq21_Amber03_Extended from my April 13 log.).

So what do I do about Protein: p3740_Seq21_Amber03_Extended? Is it somewhere unfinished on my HD? Or is it pretty much history I and should just forget about it.

As you are using Vista, please do not install your client in Program Files folder ...

toTOW is correct about reinstalling FAH somewhere else. Vista has added security to "Program Files" and the possible solutions are to run FAH "as administrator" (which you probably did for the first 29%) or disable UAC or install somewhere else or install in WinXP compatibility mode. The default install settings simply do not work in Vista.

The message about "Core is not present or corrupted." isn't anything to worry about. The cores are downloaded on demand and all that's telling you is that the core needed by this WorkUnit is not yet on your computer so it needs to be downloaded.

How many extra Watts does this take anyway? It looks like it’s an extra 28% CPU on each core. I don’t imagine that this is like a one watt light bulb like it says in the FAQ. But I guess the FAQ wasn’t written when quad cores were around.
Is there a way to bump this up to 100% across all cores when I’m not using the machine? Would that be dangerous? Or require liquid cooling, etc.? How much extra watts does that take?

The FAQ doesn't say "a one watt light bulb".

The amount of power used actually depends on a number of factors, including video card, amount of RAM,
number of hard drives, number of optical drives, number of fans... and yes, the speed and design of the CPU.
Efficiency of the PSU should also be considered.

The increase in power usage while running fah would come from greater use of the CPU, RAM, and possibly cooling.

Some systems only increase in power usage over idle by 40 watts.
Others more, and still others, less.
