I'm new here, really new! So new that I have one main question, and I'll follow up later. Is this strictly a volunteer project or is there compensation involved? Curious.

It's strictly volunteer. The only thing that you can consider compensation is that folks are awarded "points" as a rough measure of their contribution plus the good feelings you can earn by knowing that you're doing something good for science with your computer's unused resources.
