My guess is that you were running the uni-processor client on a multi-core machine because the traditional uni-processor client only uses a single core. More recently, Stanford has been releasing the FAHCore_a4 to the traditional uni-processor client and it will make use of multiple cores like the SMP client. So, what I'm saying is that as long as it is not causing you grief or overheating then there is no real problem here.

Could you link me to the public announcement I'm curious as to it might hold a clue as to why they would to that? Doesn't sound reasonable at all to do that when lots of people have the classic client installed for the specific reason of it using one core only. If PG wanted to slowly move away from that, why include the classic option with the V7 Beta?

@OP

To give an answer you must ask a clear question and provide us with enough information. Currently, the information is lacking, we don't know your hardware configuration, we don't know what client we don't know what other applications might be running.

Isn't it covered in the forum faq's how to ask a question ( and get the best results unless you rely on the 'lucky guess' from someone just posting an assumption ).

The announcement doesn't mention that project given out to clients configured without -smp could be configured to run as smp :?:

Can't find much other then this -> viewtopic.php?f=18&t=17969&start=0

I would suspect that if classic clients without -smp would all get smp configured project there would be allot more and different complains.

Hi Jon,

Can you provide us with a little more information? What machine are you running on/what project did you receive? Posting the log file helps a lot too.

Thanks! We'll see if we can get you folding at 100%!!

Read the second post in that topic.

The first post announces it available one core (which was true on Feb 07, 2011) and the second post states very clearly that as of Mar 15, 2011 that it has a new feature. The same project will be assigned whether you have one core or many.

This is not answering the original question, though. If you have multi-core hardware, you have to configure the client so that it's allowed to use all of your cores. V6 without the -smp flag (or V7 without a SMP slot) the A4 core will still restricted to running on one core. That has always been a problem with V6. The V7 installation defaults to SMP if it detects the right hardware, so the issue will become less common, but you can still specify that you want a uniprocessor slot if that's your choice.

I worded my question wrongly, I mean to say: if you don't use -smp you should still be restricted to one core, which you just confirmed.

If you want more details about the FAHlog, please read this (viewtopic.php?p=160884#p160884).

I've tested this with the A4 core. The same exact PRCG will run either way, which is determined by the client's flags.

In other words, if -smp is not specified, it will run as a classic client.
