PPD and comparisons...

Well I've already started techically, for a while. And usually I look at my rank or Team Rank for an idea of how good I am doing. So I wanted to know, what is an average PPD for folding? Or if not Average, then what is one that I can be proud of?
Specs that matter:
AMD Phenom II 1055T 2.Ghz Hex Core
HIS Radeon HD 5770 (800 processing units and 850Mhz clock)
Windows 7 Professional Edition x64
According to FAHmon, SMP core(using 3 of 6 cores, big units on) generates 2409 PPD
single core runs 256.75 PPD
And the GPU one FAHmon will no calculate, though I've determined that it folds maybe about 1277 PPD (taking the current unit score, and using time frames to estimate Minutes/frame)
So are these good scores? I'd compare to looking around, but it seems a lot of people posting PPD's are either extreme OC'ers or just plain better then me at this point.
btw my current config I have SMP on 3 cores for big units, single core ProtoMol core and GPU2 on their own cores, leaving 1 of the 6 free for my own needs.
And cooling is not a problem, neither CPU nor GPU breach 45C(50C at the worst)

The answer to this can get pretty complex. Average PPD comparisons across clients vary greatly. I have an Athlon XP running the classic client that gets between 100 and 300 PPD. I also have a 2P system running bigadv that gets about 80,000+ PPD. The Athlon has run non-stop since 2006. I built the bigadv system myself. In the end I'm proud of them both, for different reasons.
Right now I am running 2 bigadv, 7 classic, 7 GPU2, 2 GPU3, and 1 PS3. I guess you could say I like variety.
Ultimately, each of us has to decide what it is that we can be proud of.

Persoanlly for that rig i would run 1 instance of smp 6 and stop folding on the 5770 until the openCL core comes out for ATI. Running my own x6 i get just over 11k PPD but mines at 3.5 so i reckon 8-9k PPD depending on the WU for your machine.

1) I agree with Nathan_P. 5 would be ok but I recommend to use all 6 cores (running -smp flag). FAH runs at low priority so you will not see any lag during your activities (office, internet, video watching). It should also work while you're playing games, but here it depends on the game. If you like to play graphics and CPU intense games like FPS you should stop FAH in the meantime, if you play Solitaire you can let it run. And don't use the 5770 for folding.
2) "When it is done." (old ID software citation). The new v7 FAH client should be released this quarter, but nobody knows. See also Vijay Pandes blog:

According to AMD product description your card supports OpenCL (

Well then 6 cores it is. After my single core finish's its last work unit, I'll switch.

MegaRock91, welcome to the Fold. I'm also running X6 power. Mixing normal use with folding requires some fine tuning to get the best mix of points per day. If you plan to use the computer frequently for other things, yes SMP 5 may be good to consider. The SMP client runs at a very low priority. It will yield to everything ... but if you force it to yield too often the progress will really suffer. I don't think we have any word on when the ATI clients will be updated. The version 7 client is anticipated this quarter but I have no info on what is in version 7 and do not know if it contains the long awaited ATI client or not. The current ATI client uses considerable CPU processing time and you need to experiment with the environment variables to find the optimal PPD. My linux X6 averages 9-14K without a GPU client. My Vista64 X6 averages 6-9K while running a GPU client. Amaruk said it well ... we pick what we are proud of. Any folding contributes and all contributions matter.

5 cores would be good - though i've found that just letting it run all 6 works for ME except in heavy gaming sessions - experiment with you favorite programs and see which works for you. Net browsing and word should be fine.
OpenCL is due "soon". however this is PG so their "soon" is slightly different to our "soon". I have noticed taht there are a couple of beta projects floating around that are testing the new core so progress is being made.
Not sure on the last question but i would imagine so.

EDIT I checked Wikipedia (
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison ... sing_units) and found that OpenCL 1.1 is supported on HD 5000 Series GPU and HD 6000 Series GPU. HD 4000 Series and below doesn't have OpenCL.
So far, there hasn't been any official announcement for the requirements of running FahCore_16 on ATI/AMD GPUs so you will have to watch the usual places for more information
