Tried to swith to ATI GPU softare

I just joined, and tried the simple Windows download, which found work and was started.

I notice that there was no GPU activity, and found out about the GPU download that would use my ATI 4870, uninstalled the first version.

Installation seems OK, but it cannot find any work.

What am I doing wrong?

Did you download the right version? GPU client 3 is only for the new Nividia Fermi cards I believe ATI support for GPU3 will come in v7 clients.

What is the server ip that your client is trying to contact? It could be that the server is down or unable to give out WU's atm.

could you post your log file using tags so we can see what your client is trying to do?

Also are you using the most current ATI Cat drivers?

I will try to figure out what IPAddr it is looking for.

Thanks for the reply.

Is there a reason you set your GPU machine ID to 2? I think GPU client requires it to be 1. I only have experience with the CPU client since I have yet to try out the GPU client. But that may be your problem. If you only are attempting to run the GPU client I'd set it to 1 in the config menu and restart your client and see if you can get a WU.

I noticed it came up as ID2. The first ver. set 1, I didn't mess with either. I'll try 1 for a while.

Same result for ID1, (I did restart client).

Maybe the servers have a demand "situation", and I will get a packet later...

Its default direct connection port is listed as 8080.

Do I have to associate or enable that port? Maybe the other version of software used 80 which I know works!

Sorry I couldn't be more help. Haven't installed the GPU client for my HD 3650 yet. Was hoping they'd have the server ip in the log file like they do in the cpu client. I'm still a newbie compared to some most of the guys here so someone who has an answer will come along eventually.

This is the download link I used for newest software.

Code: Select all

Before you give up, you may want to try a couple things:

Wait a bit (6-12 hours), just in case it's a server problem and not your installation.

Search for the Environment Variable (EV) threads in the ATI forum. Setting those before starting the client will help minimize performance impact on your system and maximize Folding efficiency.

Try the Console client instead of the Systray client. Occasionally the Systray client doesn't play nice on some systems for unexplainable reasons. With the Console client you can set the client ID to any number from 1-8 so you can deconflict with any other CPU or SMP client[s] you might be running.

If you're trying to use the viewer, don't. It's broken.

Going to try the Console method, whatever that means... :)

Baowulf was sort of incorrect in saying that GPU3 doesn't work with Nvidia cards. While the current GPU3 core won't work with ATI cards, the client that allows Nvidia cards to get GPU3 WUs has been found to work just fine with ATI cards, though of course ATI cards only download the work that they can do. The link to the latest version is at http://foldingforum.org/viewtopic.php?f=59&t=16471.

<-NFG: There were no ATI GPU jobs last night AFAIK. Problem is that setup issues give same error as server-down.

The GPU3 worked on my HD 5450 earlier this week, but chopped SMP production 35%, so I turned it off.

The console client did not work on the HD 5450 with default install procedure.

Been too busy to actually make the change to 'Console', and had only begun to read about it some. Then Voila!

About 15 minutes ago, I noticed a spike in temp for the GPU. I guess there was just no work that fit my 4870. Took in a W.U. of 10K instead 250 (?") whatever units the basic version started with, I don't remember.

So, off and running! I did see quite a bit of activity in the CPU also. Temps on the two cores are roughly 12-15C over idle, that is about halfway up to CPU torture test levels.

I can now get back to reading the forum for ideas on how to figure 'Flops".

Thanks for your input guys,

Bruce Hinton

e.t.a: BTW the machine ID is still set to 2, I forgot to even check it on a fresh install very early this morning. Apparently it is not an issue, I guess just to keep track of multiple machines at work.

There was a global problem with getting new work units for GPU 2 Client since yesterday. The client is working again since 30 minutes.

Try it and it will work normally now.
