Version 5.xx of the client is out-of-date and is only really recommended for machines running on pre-XP versions of Windows. It can only download certain projects, and as time goes on the number of projects that it can get has decreased, sometimes resulting in WU shortages. You should download version 6.23 and run that, or perhaps download the SMP client and take advantage of your multi-core processor if you leave your computer on most of the time. If you don't run your computer a lot, then I'd recommend installing a second copy of the classic client so that both cores will be put to use. http://folding.stanford.edu/English/Win ... 3]See here for more information on multi-client setup.

Hi XB, wekcome to the forum.

You appear to be running an old client, 5.03, the current classic client is 6.23 (and the current SMP client is 6.30).

The message saying you are assigned to server 0.0.0.0 means there is no WU available.

You could try shutting down and restarting your system, this may allow F@H to find a work server with some WU (work units) for you.
It may help to install the latest client, and to allow big units and advanced methods, as this will increase the potential pool of WU's available to be allocated to your system.

Thanks, guys.
However, please don't use shorthand (SMP ?, multi client ?)
systray, console ?

My windows XP is not the 64-bit version

PS. I downloaded Folding@home-Win32-x86-systray.
It seems to deliver Folding@home503.

More later, when it's set itself up a bit.

Welcome to the F@H Forum Ex_Bay,

To get the latest F@H Classic Client, visit this site: (http://folding.stanford.edu/English/Download) You can choose to download the Systray Version or the Console Version, whichever you want. The Console Version is a no-nonsense Client Version. Both Clients will use the same FahCore to process the work so there isn't much difference. If you are using the Systray Version, please note that you shouldn't use the Viewer as it is known to be buggy and can crash your system. For monitoring the Client, please visit this tool list and download FahMon or HFM.NET

When you run the Classic Client, it will only use 1 Core hence your CPU Usage will be 50% If you want to donate more CPU Cycles to the F@H Program, you will have to install a second Classic Client by following this guide. Thus when you will be running 2 instances of Classic Clients, it will use 100% of your CPU. Please note that your day-to-day applications will run normally as the F@H Clients will use only free CPU Cycles. If a program wants CPU Cycles, it will give up the CPU Cycles.

I have downloaded the System Tray thing, version 6.23.
This is what's happened:-

[16:37:34] + Attempting to get work packet
[16:37:34] - Connecting to assignment server
[16:37:35] - Successful: assigned to (0.0.0.0).
[16:37:35] + News From Folding@Home: Welcome to Folding@Home
[16:37:35] Work Unit has an invalid address.
[16:37:35] - Error: Attempt #12 to get work failed, and no other work to do.
Waiting before retry.

I'm getting really peeved with this. When I first got a PC onto Folding, it worked 'straight out of the box'. I now find myself drowning in a morass of short-hand confusion. I want to help, but most of the 'instructions' are written for experts, not dimboes like me.

Somehow you're confused. The "System Tray thing, version 6.23." does not issue the message "Successful: assigned to (0.0.0.0)." Scroll back in the log from that point and I suspect that it will say you're still looking at a log from V5. Maybe you didn't uninstall the old client or maybe the logs didn't get erased.

Right-click on the systray icon and look at the log from there. Is it the same one or a different one?

Have you managed to download more WUs or can you still not connect to Stanford?

Go to your browser and open the following.

http://assign.stanford.edu/
http://assign2.stanford.edu/

Each should show a blank white page with OK.

still no work units, but I got an OK on both pages.
Sorry to cause such grief.

If you get the "OK" messages from those servers but you get

[10:24:02] - Couldn't send HTTP request to server
[10:24:02] + Could not connect to Assignment Server
[10:24:03] - Couldn't send HTTP request to server
[10:24:03] + Could not connect to Assignment Server 2

that means you have a firewall which is blocking your FAH client from initiating a connection to the internet. Prove it to yourself by disabling your security software temporarily. Then figure out how to grant an exception to the client so it can initiate the connect. (Sometimes this software is called a firewall, sometimes anti-spyware, and sometimes its just part of a security suite.)

OK. Thanks.
I'll check it out.

Sunday Morning:
A complete re-installation following a strip-out and (hopefully) a clean-up. The Log file seems happy so far. :)
