XP auto restart & gpu display crash problems

Post by Frylock »

I had a bad morning.
Last night at 3:30 AM XP decided to automatically reboot after auto-installing updates. I lost the smp after it was at about 62%. Don't let this happen to you:
http://www.coderetard.com/2008/12/10/ho ... ws-update/

After logging into the computer again (and discovering the lost smp) I restarted the gpu. It was happy. Then for reasons I may never know I decided to click the "display" option on the gpu tray icon. After a 30 second or so screen freeze the computer blue-screened.

After rebooting again the gpu client would not start again. I got the following error:
The application has failed to start because cudart.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem.
I searched the C: drive for cudart.dll and it did not turn up anywhere.

Not thinking clearly (did not have my coffee yet, it was 6:00 AM) I thought this was a F@H dll. I uninstalled/reinstalled the gpu s/w and it still (obviously) did not work.

I assume now that I have to reinstall the Nvidia drivers when I get home later. I will never run that "display" option again.

My h/w configuration is here (last post):
viewtopic.php?f=46&t=10215

The computer has XP home edition SP3 installed.

Yha XP doesnt stop clients very well.

The gpu crash is a known issdue, and the viewer shouldcn't really be used.

Not to sure why it'd bugger up the driver though.

cudart.dll should be in the same folder as the core, work folder, ect.

I had windows change the display driver once. Update all my machines manually ever since.

So this is installed by F@H? I have tried to uninstall and reinstall F@H twice and it did not load cudart.dll anywhere on the C drive. The dll was blown away after the blue screen, I did not do anything to to cause this, as far as I know. When I rebooted windows the dll was gone. Thanks for the tip on the location, obviously I never noticed it before since it was working.

goto: start->All programs->Folding@home-gpu->Folding@home data files-Expert only

The cudart.dll should be there. By default that folder will not be included in any searches and therefore if that is how you tried to find it, then that is also probably why it didn't show up.

That just opened up the work folder. It is not there. It is not anywhere on the c drive. Reinstalling F@H does not restore it. Anybody want to email it to me?
(and yes I am viewing hidden files and folders)

We got it working tonight. We could not get the installer for the systray client to work this morning so we are using the console instead. Just as well, will never use the viewer again anyway.

WRT the auto reboot issue, my wife (a system admin) found this in the event viewer file (from 3:07 AM):
Restart Required: To complete the installation of the following updates, the computer will be restarted within 15 minutes:
- Microsoft .NET Framework 3.5 Service Pack 1 and .NET Framework 3.5 Family Update for .NET versions 2.0 through 3.5 (KB951847) x86

Good to see Bill Gates is looking out for me... Thankfully he rebooted for me since this install could not wait more than 15 minutes!
