Do you need a Windows password to set up the WinSMP client, or are you asking if there's a password (Passkey) for Folding in general? If A), it should be something along the lines of Control Panel->Users->(Your username)->Change/Add password (I don't know the exact steps for each version of Windows). If B), you request a passkey here
http://fah-web.stanford.edu/cgi-bin/getpasskey.py. Note that a Passkey doesn't currently prevent other people from using your username/team# combination, but if you have it then anyone using a different passkey/no passkey can theoretically be zeroed out by the Pande Group by only keeping the points submitted with your passkey.

I am thinking of using my quad core for folding.....I read the client will not post folding results unless you have a password. To be honest I do not know if they were talking about windows or for..ummm....the folding@home people. I hope that makes sense.

Yes it does.
The user that is logged on to run SMP has to have a password. On XP it would be created by going to Start > Control Panel > User Accounts. Simply select the user that will be running FAH and create a password for that account. You will then be required to enter this password to log onto your computer with that account.
The passkey Zagen30 mentioned is optional, but getting one and adding it to the client's configuration is a good idea.

FAH has several different clients. The classic client and the GPU client do not need any passwords. On a quad, you can run up to 4 classic client (one per core) plus if you have one or more supported GPUs in your system, you can run GPU clients.
You probably have been told that the SMP client is better for your quad than four classic clients. It will only run if you have a non-blank Windows password, so that's probably where you got the idea that a password was required. In any case, you should make an informed choice between multiple classic clients and the SMP client. The password issue is only one fact that would influence that decision.
> The SMP client generally earns points faster than multiple classic clients.
> The SMP client is "beta" which means that is is more challenging to run. There are a number of unresolved issues that you may or may not encounter. The classic client(s) is/are mature and are essentially trouble free. Your knowledge of computers and your tolerance of (or desire for) finding answers to those unresolved issues should be a factor in your decision making process, even though for many people, SMP is essentially trouble-free.
> The Pande Group is actively testing a replacement for the SMP client/core. There is no official estimate of when it might be ready to be released or what problems it may have when it is released.
