Q from new guy

I've only been participating for 6 weeks or thereabouts so this Q may be obvious to the old timers. The first 6 or 7 work units were completed in a short time. (12-18 hrs, depending on pauses) The last 2 have taken up to a week even being away for 4-5 days and not pausing at all. Is this normal or do I have a computer issue? Thanks, Granpa

Check your logs for the Project numbers, then go to the Project Summary and check the column for Preferred Deadline. You'll probably find you had 2, or more, very different projects.

If you let us know what client you're using and the specs of your machine then it'll be easier to answer.

I'm too old to be real computer literate so I'm not sure if this info copied below is what is needed.
I am using a 3-4 year old Dell Dimension 2300 with XP. I used to think that it was the "cats pajamas" (I told you I was old) but it doesn't look too sporty at this point. Thanks, Granpa

According to google that's a Pentium 4 1.8GHz in there working away, so that sounds about right then.
You could change out the CPU for one a little faster (a 2.6 Ghz seems to be the quickest) and make sure there's the max RAM, 2 - 512 MB sticks.
There are older and slower machines folding so don't feel embarressed!

Thanks. So the bottom line is that there are some quick work units and there are some that take a lot longer?

Sure, this one's fairly big at 755points also a good score.
but will take a while on your system.
Look here for the size points deadlines and what the project is doing.

OK. Now i understand. There is some wisdom out there about old dogs and new tricks but I can't remember what it was. Thanks for taking the time to educate me on what it is that I am involved in. (I know preposition at the end. I'm a rebel)

Welcome to the foldingforum, retdetvet.
We have our share of both rebels and conformists (if those happen to be opposites). As long as you fold, you'll be welcome here, and we'll be ready to help.
