In xp If a user runs f@h then logs out and leaves the computer on the log on screen would f@h still be running or would it need to be restarted once the next user logs in?

If you set up the client to run as a service, then it will run no matter who is logged on as well as if the computer is sitting at the log-in screen.
Note that some clients do not run as services nearly as well as others. The uniprocessor client runs very nicely as a service, the Windows SMP client needs a lot of tweaking, and I can't remember about the GPU client but I think it has some issues as well.

GPU client can run as a Service on XP but not Vista.
Note: In all cases the Console client must be used to run as a Service.

Use the console client with window as a service. I runs regardless logged in state. I ran all of my windows machines that way until I switched to Linux.
