folding is very very slow 2 weeks to get to 200/300

i have 4 friends folding in my name they don't show on my stats

i tried to post text folders and picture here cannot see how to , can you help

Please describe your hardware.

Which project are you folding? If you find FAHlog.txt, it will contain a line Project xxxx (Run xx, Clone xx, Gen xx).

Some projects have deadlines that are as much as 12 weeks, although most are shorter than that.

Your name won't show up in the stats until somebody completes a WU and uploads the results.

The preferred time for that project is 6 days, but the max is 60.

You're folding on a celeronD, that's old hardware and you should try running smaller work units. I didn't recognise the project but looking at the points is a very heavy one, and I am almost sure it needs -advmethods.

You should be running small wu's, and no advmethods with your hardware that way the wu's get processed quicker and you'll get points sooner.

Sorry if this is not what you wanted to hear, but your computer is not one of the fastest around

Edit:

To make clear, the recommodation isn't a fact but based on personal observation. -Advmethods has no influence directly on wu processing time, and small wu's are only relevant with upload, not the amount of steps. I just think that on average I got faster finishing work units without -advmethods, and when having small wu's selected.

While not the top of the line processor, it will still earn about 100 points per day. Many people fold with very similar systems.

7im , i have only moved from 200/300 up to 213/300 in 3 days

MtM , yes its 4/5 years old but going well , i'm on a small unit now 300 i take it but how do you choose , what do you mean project , and it's heavy , and what is advmethods ,

a lot of questions but i talk to people and they are folding a wu in a day

can i upgrade with something that would not be to expensive

That's too slow. You must have something else running that uses up all the spare CPU cycles, leaving few cycles for FAH. Open task manager and see what else is using the CPU % and time.

It might also help to see your log file. Copy and paste your log file between the

tags. You can access the log by right-clicking the FAH tray icon, hovering over Status, and clicking Log file. (If you were using the console client, you'd find it in FAHlog.txt in the location of the executable)

It looks like you're completeing 1% in about 2.3 hours so 100% will be 230 hours. That's 9.6 days if you were to run 24x7 or it's 51 days if you run 4.5 hours per day.

Project 3860 has an 8 day preferred deadline, which you won't be able to make, but it has a 60 day final deadline so you'll meet that one as long as you get at least your estimated 4.5 hrs/day. If you did decide to run 24x7, you'll be get 77 PPD. (That's a little slow for half of a Celeron D 320, 2.4 GHz but it's consistent with the 80% number you reported.)

At your 4.5 hrs/day, you'll be getting 14.5 PPD.

I see you've changed your checkpoint interval from the default of 15 minutes to 5 minutes. I'd change that back.

i think i understand most of what you said , what is ppd, That's a little slow for half of a Celeron D 320

what do you mean half , i changed my setting to 15 mins , i thought it would report back faster

windows will use about 6/8 % , when i open task manager it will use 10/13 % , so when i close it down that 10/13 % is used folding , i only go on windows nothing that will use a lot of power

PPD is Points Per Day. Its an easy way to monitor how the system is working.

Harry: ppd means "points per day". I'm not sure what Bruce meant by "Half a celeron D 320" but he may have been thinking that the "D" meant that the CPU is a dual core chip - and by running the uniprocessor client on a dual processor CPU, you'd be using only half its capacity.

Your checkpoint setting establishes how often the client pauses to write a checkpoint in the checkpoint file. For slow machines we suggest the 15 minute default or even 30 minutes. When the checkpoint interval is 5 minutes that means nearly 300 checkpoints written per day, and the time can really add up over a 5 to 10 day long work unit.

You asked about inexpensive upgrades. Open Task Manager and see how much of the computer's RAM is being used routinely when you Fold. If you using 100% of available RAM, then you can upgrade cheaply by installing extra RAM. However, if you are not RAM-limited, you are CPU-limited. You'll have to buy a different processor - possibly a Pentium 4 (just saw a 2.8 GHz P4 on ebay, to fit a FSB 533 MHz socket 478 mobo) But even then your mobo might not be compatible, especially if it's a name brand machine e.g. Dell, and even if it is, the improvement might not be worth the trouble. If you upgraded to a modern dual core machine it would be much faster and more versatile, and might even use less power than the one you have now, due to smaller (65 nm vs 130 or 200 nm) hardware and a more efficient modern power supply.
