Is there a way to determine what units were being worked on by a client?
I had a hard drive refuse to boot recently. I would like to complete those units or at least free them up again sooner for the general pool.

No. Only the data on that drive would let you know what you're working on. Even if you knew that data, the WUs will not be reassigned until the preferred deadline expires. Everything is designed so that manual intervention is not required and, for the most part, not even possible.
(Even your client is designed that way, but people keep trying to change things anyway.)

I was afraid of that. I'm trying to get the drive to work again if even just to get the files off of it. I put it into another PC as a slave device, and it shows 1328.8 GB (I double-checked that). It should be only 160GB, and the machine won't boot even with it as a slave drive. I hate to see these go until the deadline to be re-assigned. The folding directory was the only one not used from a NAS.
