Microsoft patches to the browser and operating systems broke that feature 2 years ago, and so it was taken out of the v6 client so no one fell in to the trap of using it when it didn't work. It was what I call a cheat to piggyback the browser settings to get through the proxy/firewall. That "loophole" has been closed by MS to improve system security.

When they close all the holes, and make you jump through hoops (proxies, firewalls) to get through the one remaining hole, it tends to cause problems. The Fah client was not designed for that kind of jumping IMO, hence my guess that Vijay's post above is about a client overhaul needed to improve this situation.

Proxy issues

I've just installed an 8800GT in my main machine and the 6.23 GPU client also can't connect to the server.

The 5.04 client will only connect if I select the "Use IE settings" option.

The machines are all on a large corporate network with proxies and firewalls. Although I'm fairly proficient in Windows, I'm not too versed in networking. I've tried to use HTTP tunneler and Sockscap, but haven't made any headway.

Can anyone suggest any solutions?
When running with "Use IE Settings" = Yes, the client apparently is able to bypass the firewall and/or proxy, but it's not entirely true. You can successfully download a new WU and process it. Once it is completed, the client uploads it, but when the server confirms that the WU was successfully received, that message is blocked. This causes the client to report that the upload failed so 6 hours later, it tries again and the same thing happens again.

Because of this problem with "Use IE Settings" that functionality was removed from v6.

We've had many WUs that were uploaded many, many, many times but the donor who is reading the FAHlog and the client software don't realize it. This not good for servers with limited bandwidth and not good for the state of mind of the donor.

Maybe a mod can combine this thread with that other thread, as some things are fixed, some are not yet understood fully...
Topics merged and moved to "General-FAH" since this has nothing to do with SMP or GPU or whatever. If you've only read one of the discussions, please review everything that has been said in the other thread. Note the "RE: ...." title of each post.
