If you have a dynamic IP Address, then it can occasionally happen where an IP that you were assigned was previously used by a spamming operation. Thus, it was blocked. However, once you reported it, it was then unblocked since the spamming operation is now using a different IP Address. Unfortunatly, there's no automatic system that I know off in the Forum software.

In theory, you can download the latest version and install on top of the existing one, i.e. an in-place upgrade. I am not familar with MacOS so can't provide the exact steps. However, other members here who have MacOS experience will be able to help you out :)

This has been an on-going request but there's no ETA. Generally speaking, a new version of the client is released every few years if needed to advance scientific progress. Given the resource constraints, I don't expect it to be made available soon but let's wait and see what happens.

I have had no problems just updating over the older version on my Mac's, and what problems have been reported are mostly on updates to existing Windows and Linux installations with GPU slots and the autodetect and configuration of those GPUs. A few reports where the update did not run properly over a running client with an active WU. So the safest way would be to set the current WU to Finish and run the update after the WU finishes and uploads.

Thanks, Joe.

Whenever I try to do anything to F@H it seems to go pear-shaped.

I know how to stop the client and check it has uploaded, but in simple terms how would I then update the version?

I had hoped (well, assumed, really) that when I was following PantherX's sage advice about how to correct the stalling WUs, that the system would bring down the latest version but if I read my latest log correctly it hasn't.

Unless, that is, I am misreading the following lines?

Re: I seem to have received a bad _a8 core update [OS X]

The client it self does not update automatically, but it does automatically download updated folding cores. They concentrated on updating the cores as needed since that is where the actual folding work is getting done. So in this case version 0.0.19 of Core_A7 is being used. That was updated last April If I recall to fix a bug that turned up.

In the case of Core_A8, if your system had run a WU from Project 16810, the only one out using A8 until the beta announcement for 16812 today, it would have downloaded version 0.0.6 before late last week. During internal testing of 16812 they found an issue with 0.0.6, version 0.0.7 was created to fix that. It was supposed to only go to testers of 16812, but for some reason was also sent to everyone everyone running 16810. Since all OS versions of the core had not yet been tested, once it got picked up by OS X systems, that is where we found out about the problem covered in this topic. Version 0.0.8 of Core_A8 was created to fix that.

The client version is shown at the very beginning of the log. Main reason for updates to the client is to support new features on the servers, fix bugs that have shown up, and support newer OSs. Beyond that the server code has been kept backward compatible with older versions of the client, just some assignments may be restricted. Apparently from a report I have seen, there were still some version 7.2 and 7.3 clients connecting for assignments around the beginning of this year.

So no rush to update the client itself, 7.6.9 should work just fine for some time. But if you do want to update, set the current WU to Finish, once it is done and uploaded the client should show as paused. You will need to use FAHControl, as I recall the Finish function on the Web Control was not working. If you want you can also Pause after the upload has completed.

Download the client package from the F@h site, double click it to unzip it, and you can run the install. If you are running the latest versions of macOS you might have to override Gatekeeper to run the installer. The signing on the installer is accepted by older OS versions.

Since I started this thread I thought I would give you a short update. Once I found that the WUs and cores had been corrected, I simply unpaused my clients to let them run till they hit the expiration dates. That happened this morning, and I've had no issues on my three Macs. So for what it's worth, the problem seems to correct itself if you let it.

Thank you for all the help.

Thanks, Joe, I’ll give that a go.

Now that I’ve got this far I may as well go the whole hog and get everything up to date - I shall then once again leave well alone unless something else goes wrong in the future.

I have about 20 repurposed legacy Apple Xserves running MacOS 7.6. I have run these machines for years and this topic has brought them to their knees. I'm bubbling this topic up again (can create a new one if necessary, but I've been fighting with this issue for a couple of months now easily. I thought it was machine related and just slogged but I've reached the end of my rope.

I keep getting 16810 (and some 16812) downloads and they error out my machines with this same error. I have trolled through the posts and have become fast at now using terminal to unload, delete, and load but when the machines catch a 16810 / 16812 , boom. I have tried keeping various versions back but that didn't matter, now I have most of them on 7.6.21 with completely clean installs including the removal of the 2 FAH folders that the uninstaller does not remove. I have done the core folder delete, all the files in the work folder deleted, I've run out of patience waiting for them to pick up a 16810 / 16812 like it's own disease. I'll add at least 2 logs, and a list of the failing units. I welcome any help I can get. Thanks.

Re: I seem to have received a bad _a8 core update [OS X]

Apparently the problem you're having is with FAHCore_a8 V0.0.8 which is being automatically installed/updated. (It has nothing to do with the client version. I'll be sure that the team that's developing FAHCore_a8 knows that starting a new WU causes it to immediately be INTERRUPTED. (102 = 0x66)

*thank you* for the fast reply and feedback. Any work arounds come to mind ? Don't select "any" for now?

Now I'm confused. I've been told that FAHClient 7.6.13's FAHControl does work on macOS 10.14 1nd 10.15.

I guess I should avoid commenting here.

Bummer. I can keep slogging for now since it's not on my side.
I'm not familiar with how these sorts of reports turn into fixes. This an Hours, Days, or weeks type of thing to investigate / resolve? I ask because it impacts 20 of my machines and just want to manage my mindset keeping after them.

They are all on MacOS 10.7 and I moved almost all of them to Fah 7.6.21, but have earlier versions like 7.6.13 that didn't seem to matter.
