The other day I was accessing the forum without delay for quite some time. Then it SUDDENLY started being very slow or completely hanging. After confirming that other sites were still working properly I captured this data. I don't think it shows anything we don't already know. (I blame singlehop, since that's where the tracert seems to have failures)

Our hosting provider agrees that the black hole appears to be occurring at the singlehop router, however they don't have any other customers reporting the same problem. Has anyone who contacted their ISPs or singlehop had any sort of response from them so far? In the meantime I'll try and contact singlehop and see if I can get them to take a look at their router.

Well, I tried getting in touch with Roger's to see if they could contact SingleHop and work with them...
I''m encountering what appears to be a routing issue and/or a misconfigured router when I attempt to access a web based forum at http://foldingforum.org

The admin''s on that site have been it touch with their hosting firm who seem to feel the issue is with a router managed by SingleHop.

Could someone from Rogers Network support review a thread at viewtopic.php?f=27&t=6907 and see if they can get any response from SingleHop.

Thanks
As expected, they give the standard, useless reply
We apologize for the delay in responding to your email. We are currently receiving higher email volume than normal, and are attempting to answer all email as quickly as possible in the order they arrive.

Thank you for following up with this issue.

We have examined the trace route that you have sent to us and we do not recognize any problems from the trace route results.

From this trace route, all Rogers?s hops are within specifications. The lag is being experienced off the Rogers network. After the data has left the Rogers network, we no longer have control over how it is routed. For this issue, please contact the website administrator in question so they can contact the SingleHop router administrators.

Also, we have performed a series of tests on your cable modem and connection and it does appear to be working properly at this time. [We are able to communicate to your modem and there is 0% packet loss on your modem. Also, we have looked at your entire network segment as well
as your modem levels and observed the levels are within specification.]

Nothing meaningful from either SITEGROUND nor Rogers. SINGLEHOP did not condescend to respond to my inquiry at all.

Since this situation is entering its 8th week, I cannot help wondering whether you've made a mistake giving SITEGROUND/SINGLEHOP your forum hosting business.

I've had discussions with both siteground and singlehop, and neither of them can find anything wrong with either the server, or the connection to the server. The singlehop router itself is working fine as it is forwarding packets on to our server (as well as responding during the ping/traceroutes), but for some reason the packets then disappear. I'm still working to get this resolved, but the problem isn't obvious to either myself or the siteground/singlehop network engineers.

Uncle Fungus,
Unfortunately, this issue is still occuring. In my post http://foldingforum.org/viewtopic.php?f=27&t=8087, I report that this problem has been occuring fairly often over the last week, and that I experience problems access the forums from both my home and office PC, although the don't share the same ISP. (My home PC does use Rogers as the ISP)

The current tracert for my office PC is (I will post my home PC tracert route separately):

Code: Select all

Tracing route to foldingforum.org [99.198.108.202] over a maximum of 30 hops:

 19 38 ms 37 ms 38 ms ns1.m202.sgded.com [99.198.108.202]
Trace complete.
As you can see, the tracert is completely different from that posted by codysluder, except for the last 3 entries.

This suggests that the problem is (indeed) at singlehop, since the chances of 4 distinct paths (codesluder, mhouston, my home and my office) encountering a connection/routing problem are extremely remote.

I'm not sure we can draw that conclusion. I'm frequently on the forum for long periods of time. From here it's fine 98% of the time, but then there's that occasional time when I can't get through and it always seems to stop at singlehop.net.

Of course if tracert sometimes works from your home, we might know more than we do now.

I'll keep trying the forums from home. As best as I can recall, I couldn't access the forums back in early Dec or around when others were noticing the problem, then the problem went away and came back within the last week. It is possible that I just happened to be on VPN or campus every time I checked the forums, but I believe that I was getting through from home normally between then and now.

skinnykid63,

I think we have a pattern here! The common element seems to be at 64.124.200.142!

It appears in both cases where the access is failing.

One thing that I've noticed: The time-of-day that I've seen this happen seems to have been more or less limited to around 07:30 to 08:30 UTC (or 23:30 to 00:30 here in PST) and it seems to last for about 15 minutes. That may or may not be the same times that others have seen the problem since that information hasn't been reported.

I have not tracked the times accurately yet, but I will report that information in the future. I suggest that others do the same.

I haven't been able to connect from home during any time of day. The time stamp on my previous post is fairly close to when I did the trace route. I haven't had any problems accessing the forums using a university connection (VPN or on campus).
