each connection to the server requires a handshake to establish a connection. The less often a computer needs to connect to the server the less overhead in handshaking; server network and processor activity is reduced per user.

I was using small, in relative terms to something with more steps.

I could be wrong. Just trying to help.
I have two slots, one has been waiting on a WU for 20 hours, and the other has been waiting for 12 hours.

I have it set to all causes.
Is it that there are no more WUsl, or are servers overloaded?

Mostly servers loaded to about the max they can sustain over their networks and still accept returns. If you look at the Server Status page, there are currently more than 400k WUs, ~270k for CPU folding and ~150k for GPUs. They are assigning at a rate of about 140k per hour.

At this point about the best that can be done is to occasionally pause the affected folding slots for a minute or two, and then start them again. That resets the timer for waiting between requests.
