As a person formerly responsible for a server room cooled using chilled water, I never once thought they were joking. I fully understood, no chilled water = no cooling, and then servers start overheating and need to be shutdown. Since the place I was at had half the cooling from campus chilled water and the rest from dry coolers, we could limp along for a while on just the dry coolers. But after that, especially in summer, there was a priority list of machines to keep up and the rest started being shut off in order from least necessary.

If the servers are all in one room, why can't PG create their own chilled water supply?? Seems simple enough...

Yes, it might be simple enough but the servers are in different Server rooms hence the simple solution doesn't work.

Exactly, it sounds simple enough but does not take into account that large institutions such as universities and manufacturing companies may have central sources of utilities such as steam, chilled water and other services for cost efficiency reasons. Where I used to work was just one large server room among four that I knew of on campus. The only reason we had dry coolers at all was that at the time that part of the building was converted into a computer room, chilled water was not supplied to that part of campus yet. The building did have its own chiller, but the room exceeded its capacity. Several years later as the number of computers grew and the building chiller failed, the campus had added another chilled water supply to that end of campus and ran a loop into our building instead of replacing the building chiller. That cost $50-60K, the building chiller replacement would have been over $150K.

As for this outage at Stanford, it only effected some of the folding servers. My machines switched over to getting work from a different work server at Stanford, the only issue was that one WU did not get uploaded for about 18 hours because it needed to go to one of the downed servers. That and the stats servers also were offline, but I expect the credit will show up eventually.

Each project resides on a single server (Work Server, or WS) which can download and upload those WUs. In some cases there's a second server that can accept uploads if that server is down when you finish a project, but the most of the Collection Servers (CS) need a software upgrade to make them functional again. If some servers that have projects that can be assigned to your client are down when you need to download, you'll automatically be redirected to another server. The Assignment Server (AS) is responsible for keeping up-to-date on which servers have projects that can be assigned to your client and directing you to the best WS -- but only if there is one that's functioning. That means that some people can get new assignments and some cannot.

As has already been said, the Stats server is separate, but the stats can be held by the WS until the stats server comes back up. That's not a valid reason to stop folding as long as the AS can find work for you.

The site has been having intermediate trouble for the last 12 hours or so. Folding.stanford.edu greets me with "Page not found. The page you requested cannot be found. You may have used an outdated link or may have typed the address (URL) incorrectly. If you entered the URL manually, please check your spelling and try again."

Still not able to load the Home Page here, so it may take a while for any fix to propagate.

I reported it, and got a reply back from Jon Robertson at Stanford's IT Services:

There were problems on one of the www servers. We've removed it from the pool and I'll be looking at it in more detail.

Site seems to be up now.
