General server issues?

Re: General server issues?
So that means that should I go over the preferred deadline but return the results before the guy that got the reissued WU, he won't get any credits? That's just.. Wow.. Way to screw others over!
For the sake of the argument, let's assume I do have something resembling conscience. Once i go over the preferred deadline the right thing to do would be.. to delete the WU?

Now that's an interesting and unexpected turn of the storyHi xxxxxx (team xxx),
Your WU (P2606 R35 C0 G135) was added to the stats database on 2007-12-29 11:02:02 for 292 points of credit.
Hi endrik (team 276),
Your WU (P2606 R35 C0 G135) was added to the stats database on 2008-01-02 09:04:31 for 0 points of credit.
I am relieved to see that it wasn't my fault (and anybody's in fact) - thank you for your work Bruce.
@ Ren - yes, looks like "suideleting" would be a way of doing justice to one's fault of tresspassing preferred deadline, but despite my deep faith in human nature I prefer to stay on the realistic side The only way I see to avoid such cases is having just one deadline. I understand the reason of setting the "preferrred" one to keep simulation going as planned, by making sure that a specific part of trajectory will be there on time to calculate next one. Still, by affording such a loophole discovered above we ARE slowing down project too - it could go faster, were it not for hundreds (or thousands, I dont' know the scope) of unnecessarily double-crunched WUs. But that's something to consider by gods or demi-gods of this project, not by us mortal & modest crunchers
yours,
endrik

I'm pretty certain that both of you will get credit, it is just that the work will be duplicated.Ren02 wrote:So that means that should I go over the preferred deadline but return the results before the guy that got the reissued WU, he won't get any credits? Individuals won't be getting a bad deal, but the fah project as a whole will.

This explains the missing credits. And this is a severe bug in the system.bruce wrote:[
FAH is designed to protect itself from missing scientific results. One aspect of that design is reissuing WUs which pass the Preferred Deadline. Another aspect of that design is reissuing a WU to a client which appears to have lost the WU.

As far as my folding credits are concerned, I have some more bad news. Namely, yesterday (01.09 - January the 9th) I uploaded another 100% completed WU, and scored ZERO points of credit. Here is the proof for quick reference:

Bruce, would you mind checking up in the Projects data base whether my case of missing credit has also been caused by the same bug as Endrik's?
If so, this will be strong evidence that the bug applies both to SMP and GPU beta clients...
Concluding: out of 17 WUs done on my graphics, only 14 have been added to my folding credits, which means that I am 990 points behind...
Re: General server issues?
That's absolutely not what I said. When a WU is reissued to someone else, both people get credit. I can show you many, many examples where more than one person got full credit. The stats system knows the difference between the copy (or copies) of a WU that were assigned to you and the copy assigned to someone else.Ren02 wrote:So that means that should I go over the preferred deadline but return the results before the guy that got the reissued WU, he won't get any credits? If you delete the WU, you'll be (A) delaying science and (B) wasting your effort and (C) discarding potential points that you might have earned.
Maybe, maybe not. You're jumping to conclusions. The fact that I cannot explain it doesn't help anybody at this point. I've turned this data over to the Pande Group to see what they can find. They may have another explanation than the one you have decided on. In fact, you were sneakernetting, and that can cause any number of strange crediting issues. FAH is specifically designed to run without any intervention by you and when you manipulate the files, you have many opportunities to confuse the servers. (See my initial response on page 1) If there truly is a bug there, I'm quite sure the Pande Group will deal with it to our satisfaction. This explains the missing credits. And this is a severe bug in the system.
Bruce, congrats on descvering this serious BUG! I hope this is going to be fixed in some way or another very swiftly...

Hi Obcy_from_Poznan (team 276),

However, on the 8th of January I decided to reinstall F@H client because I thought there was something strange with the behavior of it. Immediately after a WU was uploaded (on the 01.08) I stopped the GPU client and deleted its directory, then I downloaded F@h again into another diorectory and started it. I did it because I had noticed a strange behavior of F@h, namely when F@H client started in autostart directory it was sometimes showing a different percentage than when I started the same client manually from Total Commander.(!) I want to stress that there is no doubt it was the same file winFAH-GPU-GUI.exe in the same directory (I checked it many times because I couldn't believe it!) Yet, the client was showing a different progress in %, as if the client had two independent threats of progress. The behavior only depended on how the f@h client started, either by XP autostart or by manual double clicking on the_same file: winFAH-GPU-GUI.exe (the shortcut in autostart led to the same directory file as I started sometimes manually from)
So, I deleted the whole trouble causing directory and downloaded it again and installed it in another directory (the count started from 0 of course)
Nowadays, I start winFAH-GPU-GUI.exe manually to avoid the previous problem.
As I can see your reply 7im, I understand that the server gave me the very same WU as had been just finished and uploaded by the previously installed version of winFAH-GPU-GUI.exe and it resulted in unnecessary double work and the lack of credit?
Re: General server issues?
According to the server, that's not what happened. The WU for which you got credit took more than 2 days for your machine to complete. The one for which you received zero points took only 6m 12s. I don't think you processed it again -- you just uploaded work that had already been completed.Obcy_from_Poznan wrote:As I can see your reply 7im, I understand that the server gave me the very same WU as had been just finished and uploaded by the previously installed version of winFAH-GPU-GUI.exe and it resulted in unnecessary double work and the lack of credit?

Are you absolutely sure that you do not have two different FAH installations on the same computer? It sounds like it from your description.
Have you moved data from one computer to another? Have you restored a backup? Do you have FAHlog.txt / FAHlog-Prev.txt from both the old installation and the re-install showing when you downloaded both copies, when you processed them, and when they were uploaded?

Re: General server issues?
Right. I see now. Yet, I don't know how it could have happened. I thought that if I deleted all the files from previous installation, the server would have assigned a totally new WU because it would have known that the previous WU had been completed and uploaded 3 minutes before. Hmm, really strange...bruce wrote: According to the server, that's not what happened. The WU for which you got credit took more than 2 days for your machine to complete. Yes, I am possitive about it. (Yet, this strange behavior suggesting 2 installations was the main reason why I decided to delete the FAH installation and install it again on January 9 morning. But we discuss the new installation, the singularity of which I have no doubt )bruce wrote: Are you absolutely sure that you do not have two different FAH installations on the same computer? NO to both questions.bruce wrote: Have you moved data from one computer to another? Have you restored a backup?
I have FAHlog.txt from the re-install only. The previous one from old installation I deleted. But starting from now, I will pay closer attention to what is going on with FAH and I'm going to monitor the log and credit points. If something similar happens again I'll save all the logs and let you know.bruce wrote: Do you have FAHlog.txt / FAHlog-Prev.txt from both the old installation and the re-install showing when you downloaded both copies, when you processed them, and when they were uploaded?
Here is the relevant fragment of FAHlog.txt from the re-install.

Re: General server issues?
Well, as I can see there is no info about the 9th of january in this log!! Strange... I pasted it from c:\Program Files\FoldingAThome\FAHlog.txt.Obcy_from_Poznan wrote: Here is the relevant fragment of FAHlog.txt from the re-install.

Geee..., to my surprise there is also another log FAHlog.txt in here: c:\Documents and Settings\SainTRanger\FAHlog.txt (!)
The first directory is where I manually installed the FAH program, and the second directory is where the log is being updated with progress now.
This redundancy of FAH logs confuses me! Why are there GPU client logs in two separate places? Shouldn't the logs be saved only in the directory where I manually put the FAH program?
As far as I remeber from 3 years experience with folding@home the CPU cilent had been saving its log in 1 place, namely where it had installed and not in c:\Documents and Settings\user's name\

Re: General server issues?
My years of experience with fah match your experience with FAH. Fah keeps it's files in one place. Only other programs can interfere. Are you sure that Total Commander is not responsible for this double fahlog.txt file problem instead of the FAH client?Obcy_from_Poznan wrote:Well, as I can see there is no info about the 9th of january in this log!! Bingo, you have just asked the right question. thx7im wrote: My years of experience with fah match your experience with FAH. Fah keeps it's files in one place. Only other programs can interfere. Now, I think I have 2 programs to be blamed. A few weeks ago I installed and used programs for monitoring FAH. They were FahMon_2.3.1 and FaSpy. I used them irreguraly, though. Is it possible that use of these applications might have caused the problems, and multiple places where the FAH logs were saved?
Hmm, maybe this can also explain why there seemed to be doubled FAH threads...

Re: General server issues?
No, AFAIK, those applications only read data from the FAH directory to provide status info. They do not write and move info.Obcy_from_Poznan wrote:Bingo, you have just asked the right question. thx7im wrote: My years of experience with fah match your experience with FAH.
