Is there a FAQ that has an answer for why some projects are requiring a certain # thread CPU count to download the WU, but then, as is my case, I can drop the CPUs down to 4 and it still completes in under 4 hours? It seems like the requirements for 12 or more CPUs isn't really correct in terms of returning a WU before the deadline. Is there more to the CPU requirement than that?

No FAQ, since the answer to this question will not change the fact on why we set certain constraints.
Imagine you know the reason why, will you be able to change this situation?

Saying that, if one would be able to finish certain WU within the deadline, one needs to consider other people who do not fold 24/7, who might even have less powerful CPU than one in question. If a certain core count is disabled, there is a good reason for that.

Just wondering, is there any news regarding possible improvement in task allocations with respect to CPU core counts? Or should we consider this to be the new situation? I'm just wondering if I should switch to other projects as the situation has been pretty bad for anything less than 20 cores for the past several days and I've never seen this in F@h before.

I've also been thinking, why use core count as a metric for assignment? Newer CPU architectures can do just as much work as - if not more than - old CPUs, with fewer cores. Is it the only practical measure of 'capability' given F@h's infrastructure?

Edit: I've looked at my history for the past few months and it looks like the only tasks that have TPF > ~80 seconds are on hosts with core counts of 8 and 20. Which makes sense, I suppose, but those tasks still take several hours, up to something like 9.

I also noticed this post in a similar thread that talks about the current client mixing GPU and CPU task allocations. Does this suggest that the assignment issues we're observing now would not be present with the previous client? I'm just trying to understand what's going on on the server side.

Core count is used, because other options to constrain are too robotic and don't work, and develop them would take away developers time from more important things.
The investigation into the issue is starting now, since I finished with my other life activities for the working week, had a good sleep, narrowly avoided a cramp in my leg this morning, had a wonderful breakfast. The fixes, if there is any, will not come till later next week, though.
