I can actually fold with both gpus at the same time without a problem, the igpu is a lot slower obviusly, but they both run fine. my only problem is that the nvidia gpu boosts way too high for brief moments.

i am running windows balanced profile ( i have no option to even change it)

hmmm ... the writeup I saw implied three modes - could well be a bios setting I guess ... slightly different but I use my bios to turn off turbo modes for some of my cpus so there may be something similar for the gpu - or it might need an nvidia package to manage it?

I had the feeling those were Asus settings, not Windows settings, just reading the reviews.

Same here but they should be manageable from somewhere

Jony wrote:That reply was meant for Bob williams who suggested i disable my igpu to get my "dedicated" gpu working with folding, but since its stupid to get a laptop to just do folding i thought i dont need to say that i wanna use the laptop as intended also, so that makes disabling the igpu a non option as that would result in me not being able to use my laptop and has nothing to do with folding

As for my original problem, i think i figured out whats happening, but have no perfect solution for it. It seems that if i leave all the setting stock in msi afterburner the card while cold just sometimes monentarily forget that its under a heavy load and jumps from the usual 1600mhz range up to 18-1900 mhz ( the highest ive seen is 1930mhz) after the card has heated up and is thermal throttling i can take off the negative offsets from msi afterburner and the card will run fine as long as it has work to do, but if it gets to cool down again the behaviur returns

Now the part i dont get is it doesent matter how much offset i give or if its a memory or gpu offset this behaviur stops. This workaround works but i would like the standard gpu boost to behave normally, is there a way to fix it? or should i contact asus support about it? i have a TUF a15 laptop if this info is helpful

Thanks for your help
You can fold and use your display at the same time. I've done it since I've been here, and the 1660 will do it a lot easier than my 2400G will. If the 1660 has no video output that's another story.

As for the memory and clock issue, could you use the software to force a lower limit on either speed? Quite a few people use software to control cards and find the sweet spot for efficiency and/or heat issues.

Apparently you have Optimus (or equiv). You want it to fold with the nvidia GPU and switch to low-power mode when you're not folding.

Somebody needs a way to prevent the GPU from switching to low-power mode when FAH is trying to run. It will certainly crash FAH if you try to run it on the iGPU when it thinks it is running on the NVidia. Nobody has diagnosed the high/low detection circuitry so nobody knows how to prevent it from switching inadvertently.

The only people who have successfully made FAH stop crashing is to force it into high-powered mode. Maybe there's a switch somewhere that allows you to manually choose high power mode and manually choose power savings mode when you promise not to try FAH. I don't know of any switches except ones that are always on.

Sometimes, you can manually select what applications use what GPU. See this Windows 10 guide: https://www.howtogeek.com/351522/how-to ... indows-10/ or this one if you're not on 20H1: https://nvidia.custhelp.com/app/answers ... process-of

This is valuable information for anybody who has Optimus graphic hardware.

The 1660 pipes its output to the integrated graphics via the PCIe bus, and the integrated grahpics just sends it out on the same output. No physical switching required. At least that's how it's supposed to work. There are even firmwares available for some desktops that lets you use plug-less compute cards as graphics cards, using the same mechanism ( I don't think these are official though).

FAHClient doesn't care how the graphics gets to the screen since it doesn't produce any. It does care if it needs the shaders in the advanced GPU and (for some reason) it has been assigned to an unsupported iGPU or that choice is switched while a WU is in progress.

I don't have any way to test it here, but it seems likely that using the windows feature (above) to assign FAHCore* to the "high performance" GPU would allow the iGPU to be used (aka low-power mode) whenever FAHCore* is not running. There's a reasonable chance that FAHClient and/or FAHControl can work with the low-power iGPU, but that needs to be confirmed.

If you can test it, please report back.

I have win 10 running both intel igpu and nvidia dgpu on one of my laptops - they play nicely and don't have any issues ... to tell the truth I didn't have to do any fancy stuff with optimus or config I simply installed the FaH on the laptop - both gpus were identified and slots created for them and once I put the beta gpu flag in the config via advanced control they have both run continuously with no issues/errors ... Simply posting to show that sometimes the software works exactly as hoped for ... I have to admit I did pause/pause-on-start the cpu slot to keep the laptop from running hot - It worked fine but was warmer than I preferred to lease it even on the cooling pad - pausing the cpu slot made the most difference to with the least impact to points generation.

Thanks Neil-B. That's one possibility and it's nice to hear about it.

My question is aimed at those which DO NOT work correctly out-of-the-box. How can we fix them? From reading the links to MS, it sounds like ... maybe ... it might fix Jony's problem.

I wish it was a plug and play solution across the various hardware. I've been wanting to add a dedicated GPU to my desktop, but hate to lose the onboard graphics. Though it's not much in terms of power, I can let it run 24/7 and nobody notices that it's even running.

I hope the OP finds a solution one way or another.

My new laptop, an HP OMEN 15 with 4800H and 1660ti has the same issue. My old intel laptop also has iGPU along with dGPU but never had this issue. Now I began to suspect something is wrong on the AMD side.
