May I propose an advanced client option to disable and/or force on AVX_2, AVX and SSE processing? Such an option could be used to test if the M1 could emulate fast enough to be useful, and it might also be a good debugging option for those who are wondering if there's something wrong with the AVX processing.

I have a new M1 MacBook Air and the latest client 7.6.21 wouldn't launch but I tried using 7.6.13 as others have suggested and it has been running fine for about 10 minutes so far. PPD started at around 45000 but is now around 22000, likely due to the passive only cooling for the Air. A MacBook Pro or mac Mini will likely have better sustained PPD.

Since the M1 has four high-speed Cores and 4 low-power cores, how would that impact inter-process communications between the CPU Core threads? Would that cause time-outs in processing, or does Rosetta 2 hide those details from the program being run?

Well, running the Intel F@H on my new M1 Mac Mini, it runs through Rosetta 2 with 8 threads, and runs faster (in Estimated PPD) than the Core i9-9880H in my 2019 MacBook Pro using 16 threads.
Over the last week, I've been averaging 60,000-70,000 PPD on the M1. My Core i9 is averaging 30,000-50,000.
Because of the way Rosetta 2 "translates" code ahead of time to native code then runs the native code, rather than conventional run-time emulation, that should be pretty close to native performance. (Other benchmarks show a ~5% performance hit using Rosetta 2.)
It would be nice to have F@H aware of high-speed vs. low-power, and only run on the high-speed. And, of course, running on the GPU would be great, but that would be rather significantly more work.

Almost the same issue on some Boinc projects.
It seems to start the WU on the performance cores (in which the program works), but then tries to offload the WUs to the higher efficiency cores, at which it can't process the data.
On Boinc for Android, you can only select the amount of low performance cores. If your device has 2 or 4 high performance cores, they're only used to load the program, and cause projects that aren't written for Cortex A50 series cores to work, to freeze...

Suggests the M1 may be weak at SIMD, as is used in F@H.

Note that the article has been updated.
Original results were mistakenly run under Rosetta.
The M1 does pretty well running native code, despite allegedly only having 128-bit simd units.

We've been working on building Folding@home cores for the ARM architecture used in the new M1 chip! It may take a while before we can use the GPU, but I believe the gromacs core has already been released for some ARM platforms.
The bigger issue is rebuilding the client, but we've been making headway on that. Stay tuned!

Does this mean you are actually considering using Apple’s Metal going forward? I do not see Apple embracing OpenCL for its new GPU architecture. Writing a core for Metal could prove useful, though, if rumours of up to 128-core Apple GPUs in the pipeline for the next two years are true. These low end M1-Macs (low end in terms of Apple’s product line, mind you) with their 8 GPU cores are already benchmarking on Nvidia 1050 levels. If GPU core performance scales linearly, a 16 core Apple GPU with this year’s architecture would already be on par with a 1080, roughly. Granted, without the CUDA optimisation, but you get the gist. No actual mid- to high-range MacBook Pro will ship with anything lower than 16-core GPUs, I’d wager. Ignore the current 13-inch pseudo-pro machine for what it is, a money grab.
Pretty soon, there will be plenty 16-core-and-up Apple GPUs in the wild. Is this enough to justify Metal development?
Cheers, Don.

John may comment on whether they are looking into using Metal. But while deprecated, Apple is still supporting OpenCL at this point. OpenCL benchmarks have been run on the M1 laptops and Mini. It is not clear for the ones I have read so far whether the OpenCL code is running natively or through Rosetta 2, and whether the code was being processed on the CPU or the GPU section of the chip.

AVX is not supported on M1 under Rosetta. The CPUID instruction under Rosetta incorrectly indicates AVX is supported. It’s luck of the draw whether you get assigned a WU that uses the AVX core.
You should not have child or respawn true.
I recommend you uninstall, delete the work and cores directories in the FAHClient directory, and reinstall.
An ARM client is being worked on, but is not at all ready for release. No ETA, of course.
