I have some basic prior experience with Linux (Ubuntu) so I'd give it a try with the folding.

Go for it.

If I had those parts lying around and all I needed was a GPU to complete it then the P106-90 is a very cheap way to do it. Low wattage, runs cool and relatively quiet all for around $55.
As a low cost intro to a dedicated folding PC you can't really go wrong.
I'm running a P106-90 along with a RTX2060 in an old Asrock H77M mb.
https://www.asrock.com/mb/Intel/H77M/#Manual
Works fine in the PCIE 2.0 slot x4 mode as thats the maximum my board can support with something else in the PCIE3.0 slot.
I'm running Linux and currently getting about +250K PPD from it. GPU sits there 24x7 and never goes above 55C or 50% fan use in a case that's not great for cooling.

Great, good to know your experience with it. Sounds perfect for my setup.

No problem and happy to help.
I forgot to mention - if using Linux don't be tempted to reduce the watts given to the P106 via "nvidia-smi". The reduction in temps and power are negligible but the drop in PPD huge. Leave it to take whatever power it needs.

Just hope that the GPU will be recognized by the Bios.
I bought one, but my Xeon motherboard, didn't recognize the P106-90, though it did recognize a 1050 and a 1060.
PCIE 2.0 x16 is plenty, good enough for anything below an RTX GPU.
While more expensive, I would choose a second hand 1650 Super, or 1660 from amazon or ebay, even if it was just because they're a bit more energy efficient.

You're right, efficiency is important, but at the moment I'm mostly just wanting to get started with something very inexpensive. I may upgrade to something more efficient down the line though. Thanks for bringing up the point about BIOS recognition, I wonder what factors cause that issue. Fortunately if I were to go with a P106-90, it's cheap enough (relatively speaking to other GPUs) that if it doesn't work out it won't be that bad.
