Thanks for the help. I'll give disabling TrendMicro a try and see if that works. I don't have my computer right now, but I'll give it a try first thing Monday. I'll keep you updated.
Thanks!

Sorry for the delay in the update. I completely disabled TrendMicro... to no avail. I also tried Tor just out of curiosity to see if that would work... also no dice. The problem is that no other program seems to be able to connect (which doesn't make any sense to me so far, except for pure browsers with HTTP connections). I know how to use an HTTP proxy in a browser... but that's not my problem. I can go to most pages just fine. How do I replicate my browser settings? (BTW, I'm fairly good with technology... I just cannot for the life of me figure this out.) I used WireShark, captured a ton of packets, all of the headers look normal, it doesn't look like our firewall is blocking anything specific. Other than perhaps incoming port scans. But it seems that all kind of other traffic is allowed out, including NetBios, most UDP connections and TCP connections, I just can't identify a pattern. I mean, I can update GIMP, and photoshop in program... and other such various programs, but I can't connect to assign.stanford.edu except through my browser? Anyone have any ideas?

So I'm now pretty sure it's our firewall. Out of curiosity, and trying to isolate the problem, I used a completely different computer, connected it to the network, it also will connect to assign.stanford.edu through Safari, but the client will not connect. Also, I discovered that our firewall is TierPoint. Anyone know of a way to make it so my client can connect around it? Like I said, Tor will not connect to the network, even when I used bridge relays, and told it to only use certain ports (443, 4443 etc..), I heard someone else recommend hotspotshield. I couldn't get the setup program to work last time, but with my failed attempts, I didn't feel like trying to set it up again. Anyone else have any ideas?
Thanks in advance!

Our firewall? Who is us? I thought you said this was your personal computer on a personal connection...
So this is actually a computer you own at a business that you own, running through a business managed firewall from a service company that manages networks called TierPoint. Is TierPoint also your ISP?
As a service provider, TierPoint should also have a helpdesk you can call to see about how to add exceptions to the firewall for applications other than Internet Exploder.

I.E. the place I work. I didn't say it was a personal connection. I am on my system at work, through my work's connection. TierPoint is not the ISP, as we are running on a DS3 connection through a different circuit provider.

So either the IT people at work, or the TierPoint people should be able to help you configure either the firewall to exempt FAH, or help with proxy settings to allow FAH through the firewall.
That's not something we can help with.

If this is a work computer, you really need to get written permission to fold on it from your superior if for no other reason than to protect yourself. Without written permission, it is way too easy for someone to play politics with your job by accusing you of stealing computer/network resources. Further, with written permission IT is much more likely to help you with your firewall problem.

Good advice from all of you. I will ask around, see if there's any way with IT or something. Until then, you can consider this thread closed.
Thanks!
