When you restore FAH from a backup, do not restore the files in the WORK folder.

It shouldn't be necessary, if you start the client and the final deadline has been passed the client should dump the wu by itself, if it doesn't then:-
if you are running v6 shut down the client, find the folder where F@h is and delete the work folder, the files named queue.dat and unitinfo.txt and restart the client
for v7 i don't know.

I agree that you shouldn't have to do that but for some reason FAH didn't discard the expired WU. Were you running V6 or V7?

I, too, hate to do this, as I am a noob and trying to be a good FAH citizen. My home desktop just got a WU that is going to take 5 days to complete. Prior to this, the longest I have gotten was about 2.5 days. Unfortunately, I am going out of town for a several weeks in 4 days, and I need to shut down my machine while I am gone. What shall I do?

Can I (easily) move the work I have completed to another machine and continue? I have a laptop that I am bringing with me. It has the same version (v7) as the desktop.

Or can I give the work to someone else to finish? Or (as a last resort) can I cancel the WU and let the server know so that it will assign the work to someone else without waiting for the timeout?

In the future, I will try to be more careful about these things. I have been so happily folding along for the last month that it didn't occur to me that I did not have a good "exit strategy" for my Christmas vacation.

V7 is designed to report cancelled WUs to the server so they can be reassigned. As you might expect, we discourage cancelling WU if there's a reasonable chance that you'll finish them before the "Timeout" (also known as the "Preferred Deadline") but in cases like this, a lot depends on how long you're going to be gone.

You didn't specify what project it was, but if you look up the project number in the Project Summary you'll be able to make a rational decision. (The link can also be found in our page header.)
