Unfortunately, it sounds like that's the case. The mtr tool gives a slightly nicer interface for traceroute/ping that shows packet loss along the way. Also, if in doubt, you can always try reaching a server in your web browser (or wget) on port 8080. If successful, you won't see much. But if it fails you'll get an error. I think there are posts elsewhere on the forum that give some more detail and advice.

I've now run into issues uploading to this server twice now. A reboot solves the upload and it continues on for weeks happily.
Not sure if its my ubuntu, like on the first page, or just a burp.
