Re: Lopsided points when folding -smp

Hey Grandpa
One thing I noticed with my 990x in the move from bigadv to smp has been that the A3 core typically only runs 6 threads compared to the full 12 on bigadv. Does this happen to you too? Is it related to the claimed lack of A3 core scaling? Could this be the reason for the huge points discrepencies both of us are seeing (75kppd down to 30kppd ?). I'm not complaining about a points change, just seems that my system is not being utilized fully and want to make sure that I'm doing all I can. The guys with 2600k's seem to be suffering much less in ppd than us.

Hello Stren, welcome to the forum.
Please post the fahlog showing the a3 running at only 6 threads. It will help us to either confirm the issue/or diagnose the problem. Thanks.

Recent folding production numbers posted on SB-E 6core/12 thread cpus don't indicate any problem with a3 scaling. 43,000+ ppd in Windows 7.

I just tried a fresh install of the client as I was running 6.29, this is with 6.34
It doesn't say it's only using 6 threads, I'm basing this on top which claims ~600% cpu usage, rather than the usual ~1200% usage. As soon as the client starts folding, it will state that it's turned on dynamic load balancing. If I run -smp 8, I also get 600% cpu usage and the same dynamic load balancing regardless of it being a fresh WU or not

Ok ignore me, I'm going to go and crawl into a hole while looking very embarassed.
Turns out after testing some water cooling parts last weekend, my bios lost it's settings and I loaded an old oc profile. Turns out that profile had HT turned off. D'oh!
Sorry for wasting peoples time. I'll yell if I still see a large disparity in smp ppd comparison to the 2600k's.

You're forgiven ... we all make mistakes.
Thanks for posting the log. Seeing it was an important step, too, since it says Mapping NT from 12 to 12 so we could see it was working.

I've got a couple right now that are pretty wonky.
A dual Xeon X5680 is working on P6990, and fahmon says 5351 ppd. The other dual xeon 5520 is doing P7141 for a PPD of 27813. Looking at the project stats, the atom counts are virtually identical as are the k-factors. Seems a bit odd that their point values are so wildly different.
What is the kfactor anyway ? I've read the faqs, the wiki and searched the forum but I've yet to find an explanation. My guess is that it's a points multiplier, is that right ? So the higher the K factor, the more work PG believes is involved in processing the WU ?

There's something wrong there. Can you copy/paste the log using the code tags please.

Ok, this is where it's at currently. The Xeons are grunting a bit, TPF is almost 8 minutes, where on pretty much every thing else it's around 2-3 minutes.

The time frames agree with fahmon but I don't know why they are so high and since it's almost finished I'd let it continue. If it was earlier on I would have suggested a restart because those times are way too high. I get over 24K on a 2600 K on that project with a gpu client running as well on the same computer.
You could take a look at task manager to see if something else is taking cpu time away from folding. Are you also running a gpu client on that computer?

No, there is only the one smp client. The machine only has cheap onboard video (S5520HC Intel mb), I doubt it could even run a GPU client. FAH has the box pretty much all to itself 24x7, same as the 5520 box.

See if the next work unit returns to sub 3 minute frame times. If it does then perhaps there's something wrong with that 6990. Does the performance tab in task manager show all 24 threads using 100% and does the process tab show only one FahCore_a3 getting all of the cpu?
Also, check your temperatures to make sure the cpu is not being throttled due to heat.

Next WU was from P7150, and it has a TPF of about 6:30. I did restart, but it didn't seem to make any difference. Yes, taskmgr shows all 24 threads at 100% and shows FahCore_a3.exe getting 97-98% usage. I don't see there being a thermal problem as these things are properly racked 4U boxes with about 8 fans in them. I'll just check on it now and then and see if the two minute TPF returns.

I'm getting sub 3 minutes TPF for 7150 on an 8 thread machine so something is still not right.
Have you tried rebooting the computer?
What version of o/s are you using?

I'm running Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise. I didn't reboot, don't see that doing anything.
