I've just downloaded a client for my debian etch system (32 bit). I get errors if I try to run smp, specifically it says I need a 64 bit OS. The CPU is a Quad Penyrn. What do I need to do to get it to use all four CPUs?
Also, it has a ATI Radeon HD 2400XT GPU that I don't plan to ever use, the box is a server, but the card came with it. Are there linux/debian clients for the GPU? I see lots of windows GPU clients, but don't see any for Linux. Perhaps I'm not looking in the right place
Thanks
Pat

Re: Linux GPU and quad SMP without 64 bit?
Hello fishtoprecords, welcome to the folding forum.
If you don't have a 64 bit OS, you can't run the SMP Linux client, then you need to run a CPU client for each of the CPU cores to use all 4.
There is no GPU client for linux yet. Some have tinkered with running a GPU in Wine, but that's an expert only task.

Re: Linux GPU and quad SMP without 64 bit?
thanks for the clarification. Is there a reason for the requirement? Since its a 64 bit processor, and a quad, it should do the calculations as well. I would not expect the network IO to get work units to be 64 bit specific.
I guess this is more history that technical.
thanks
Pat

Re: Linux GPU and quad SMP without 64 bit?
As far as I know, the client was unstable/gave bad results when they compiled it for 32 bit, so they had to go for 64 bit. And it isn't enough just to have hardware supporting 64 bit, you need 64 bit software (kernel) as well.
if you don't want to change to 64 bit, you should install 2 normal FAH clients. finstall will do it for you if you execute it without any flags; ./finstall
You might want to remove the SMP version first though.

Re: Linux GPU and quad SMP without 64 bit?
There is no way that I'm willing to reinstall linux and reconfigure it, far too much involved.
I tried running the client twice, and it fails, says
Does it insist on something silly like separate directories for each copy?

Since I have four CPUs, I really want to run two or four copies.A potential conflict was detected:
Process 14795 is currently running and may also be a client with Mach. ID 1.

Yes, seperate directories for each copy and you must set each one up to have a different machine ID.

finstall is a win, thanks. have it running on my quad, and a dual, and a single.torswin wrote:finstall will do it for you if you execute it without any flags; ./finstall
Any ETA on a SMP for Linux 32?
Or an ETA for GPU on Linux?

Sorry, no ETAs to report.fishtoprecords wrote:finstall is a win, thanks. have it running on my quad, and a dual, and a single.torswin wrote:finstall will do it for you if you execute it without any flags; ./finstall
