Proxy problems

Post by darkcube »

I'm trying to run F@H on my office computer but am running into many problems concerning the proxy they have. The problem is, without "IE Proxy" selected i cannot download any WU, If i manually enter my proxy information it still won't download WU. I'm currently running the 5.91 SMP on my quad core, using the IE proxy settings flag, and that is working correctly and downloading WUs fine, but the GPU2 client for my ATI doesn't allow me to choose IE proxy settings. If there is another suggestion to getting this to work please let me know. Blue Coat is the proxy software that we use.

Hello darkcube, welcome to the folding forum.

The USE IE SETTINGS feature was broken when Microsoft made multiple updates to its operating sytems and browser. Because of this, the feature was discontinued in v6 clients.

For most people, using IE SETTINGS might let them download a WU, but typically prevents them from a complete upload of that WU.

The only option going forward is to sort out the problems with the proxy settings, and to not use IE SETTINGS.

As long as your IT people give you a valid proxy username and password, it should work. Also verify with IT that you can use both ports 80 and 8080.

7im,

Unfortunately the proxy settings that we have don't work either (as shown in the log i posted). I am 100% sure the proxy settings are correct and allow both 80 and 8080, they are also the same settings we need to enter into any application in order to access the internet (firefox, ie, etc...). Sadly the proxy that we use is actually maintained by our parent company, so in order to 'troubleshoot' any incorrect settings they might have would require me to go through like three different levels of IT departments, and would most likely result in them just calling F@H "unauthorized software" because they wouldn't want to fix it.

The proxy settings aren't working in the v6.22 SMP client either (see thread). It may be that proxy is broken in a lot of the v6 clients.

This will need to get tested and fixed ASAP. I'll contact Pande Group about it.

I use 6.22 beta 2 SMP client at work with a proxy without problems. However, our proxy doesn't require authentication so it's probably that part which is broken, not the actual proxy code.

Did the previous generation of clients work with your proxy. The client only supports simple authentication, so if you use an NTLM proxy you either need to do some reconfiguration or proxy your proxy.

They were previously using the IE SETTINGS feature, so not sure if they worked on Proxy or not. They may not even know either way. Hope they do know, as it would help confirm the issue.

My proxy doesn't require a user name or password so that's probably not the problem, and no just using a proxy instead of "IE SETTINGS" never worked, it doesn't work on 5.91 either. But I did manage to solve the problem by installing squid proxy and redirecting that to my office proxy (if someone can explain why this works go ahead!).

So the good news is this is fixed, and I'm folding away!

Yeah, if "Use IE Settings" was used to get past an NTLM proxy, unfortunately the removal (or rather breakage by MS) of that facility will break your connectivity.

If you could detail how you set up the squid-cache proxy...I have known for some time that I needed to set up a cascading proxy at work but I was getting away with using IE settings...we still use IE6 I wish you stanford did not take that out...you just cut me off.

Now I HAVE to figure out how to get squid working before I am back up.
24kppd went down the drain with that new core and I have been desperately trying to get it back working.
I was oblivious to the expiration till an auto-update rebooted my pc for me and fah never came back up.

Please help with squid setup...I need to do it on redhat and xp.

I don't think so, for the same reason they pulled the "Use IE connecton settings" out of the v6 clients.
