Zorin OS 18 and FAH client installation

FAH provides a V7 client installer for Debian / Mint / Ubuntu / RedHat / CentOS / Fedora. Installation on other distros may or may not be easy but if you can offer help to others, they would appreciate it.

Zorin OS 18 and FAH client installation

Post by FoxFolder »

Hey guys.

I'm running Zorin OS 18, which is based on Ubuntu 24.04.

I downloaded fah-client_8.4.9_amd64.deb installation package from https://foldingathome.org/start-folding/. It seemed to install properly since I didn't get any errors.

After installation, I launched the app from my start menu and it directed me to the FAH web UI, where I was able to login to the service. However, it doesn't seem to be able to connect to my PC? When I view open processes on my machine with system monitor, I don't see anything FAH related running on my machine -- which I am guessing I should have right? How should I proceed?

For context, I have Windows 11 installed on another SSD with a windows version of the FAH client and I can run it just fine there, so at least there shouldnt be any router or network related issues at play here. And when I log in to the FAH web portal on Zorin OS it does show my Win 11 machine there in "Disconnected" state. But no sign of this Zorin machine there?

Any tips what should I do to get the FAH running properly on my machine? THanks!

from your windows machine, punch in https://v8-5.foldingathome.org
log in to your account, and you should see your Zorin client, if you actually linked that client to the account, which is done automatically most of the time

Thanks for the answer!

Can you explain a bit more ---- how/why do I need to go back to the Windows client? Is it because I logged in to the linux client with the same credentials which I used on the Windows client as well? Is that a one-time-only thing I need to do to enable linux client or do I need to do that every time I want to calculate on my linux installation?

Sorry, my reading comprehension is severely lacking today (and most of the time).
So you cannot see local fah instance on your Zorin system? But you can see windows 11 instance through Zorin, but it shows up disconnected?
v8 fahclient does not use your local network to communicate with each other. It uses wonderful cloudflare server instance or something of the kind. It also is very skittish with various non standard browsers on the first few starts.

Please, update to latest beta from foldingathome.org/beta (on Zorin and Windows11). Pause any folding you have running on Win 11 before the upgrade. Then log into your account on both machines, and see what happens. Maybe drop a screenshot of Zorin web ui machines section. And web browsers console might show you some red text witch might reveal why you are not seeing local machine as well as Windows machine showing disconnected.

Technically from widnows machine, you should see Zorin instance running. Oh, run:
sudo systemctl statu fah-client.service
to see if it is running and enabled

Some web browsers will also block the attempted direct connection to the local client.
With Brave browser, you need to use "shields down" for the web app site.
You may need to allow mixed security for the site on other browsers.

That was it! Thanks!

Lol I knew it was something as obvious as that, didn't even come to my mind to disable the Brave shield thing for the site... Thank you a thousand times!

****** ORIGINAL TEXT NOT IMPORANT ANYMORE LOL *************'

After installing the 8.5. beta version, I still have the same issue.

It seems like the local client is not running for some reason. And I'm wondering if I'm missing some super obvious thing that I need to do to launch the local client.

If I open up terminal and type in "fah-client", it tries to start the client app (I think?) by showing all the techical specs of my system and what not, but it ends with a following error:

Code: Select all

...
23:29:00:I3:Loading default resource group
23:29:00:I2:Listening for HTTP on 127.0.0.1:1234
23:29:00:E :Exception: Could not bind socket to 127.0.0.1:1234: Address already in use
(i replaced the actual port number here with generic "1234")

And I already checked with netstat that the port number that gives the error, is actually already registered to fah-client?

So based on that, it seems that something fah-related is maybe already running on my machine...? But then again, if I open system monitor that lists all active processes, I don't see anything "fah" or "folding" related on the list. This is really weird.

The Windows 11 installation I mentioned is on a separate SSD, which is currently not installed on any PC. I would need to swap out my current linux ssd with the windows one to see how the client looks on that OS. I'll try that later.

there shouldn't be any need to play around with ports. Whatever FAH uses, it uses
