3 core CPU WU

Post by silverpulser »

Have they stopped issuing CPU WU's for 3 core available machines? Both of my 4 core computers have been without any WU for a while.

There is limited number of projects which issue to anyone below 8 threads. No new CPU projects in near future either

I have a couple of 4 core machines that will still fold if given all 4 CPU cores to work with. Allowing only 3 cores has not been fruitful for the last couple of weeks, and will get the NO APPROPRIATE ASSIGNMENT message. When more than 4 threads are required, I’ll have to retire those machines from folding.

The shortage is temporary and there are no plans to explicitly require 4 threads. Even the requirement of 3 threads is simply a temporary workaround due to a bug in the client that only happens on systems with 2 threads.

Thanks for the explanation, arisu. I have scripted my own workarounds to keep my older CPU machines folding, but it’s good to know there are changes on the horizon.

I'm guessing this thread applies to my situation also. Will do what I can to contribute. Here is what I planned to post:

Upgraded to a newer desktop PC with faster CPUs - i7-7700 CPU @ 3.60GHz, no usable GPU. If I configure to use 1 CPU then no jobs assigned: "error":"No appropriate assignment". If I configure to use 6 out of 8 CPUs, jobs are assigned but the PC sounds like a jet engine and overheats. If I start with 6 CPUs and let the job start, pause, configure for 1 CPU, continue, the jobs complete on 1 CPU well before expiration.

An older PC I have still running, 3 out of 4 CPUs, rarely gets work now either. Until recently it got work all the time and completed before expiration. Although it also completes jobs well within the time allotted when it gets them.

Client version 8.4.9 on Windows 11 Pro 24H2 (new PC).

There are regularly over 800,000 0xa8/0xa9 jobs waiting to be assigned?

Thanks!

I see absolutely no point playing games in order to be able to fold on CPU:1. Stop it.

The reason why your other PCs with 3 threads are not getting any work are known and things are being worked on.
