RX580 not folding, trying to get work from 192.0.2.1

Post by Bitter »

A little background and introduction. I'm not brand new to FAH but I am brand new to this forum. I was folding steadily during the cooler months this spring but had to give up over the summer due to the heat and higher utilities costs where I live, I managed to rack up just shy of 60M points folding with a P106-100, RX580, and a Vega56. With cooler fall and winter weather upon us and COVID still very much a thing I figured I'd get back into the 'fold'. I rebuilt one computer to house two cards instead of three separate machines running and decided on Xubuntu 20.04 as the OS as I'm somewhat familiar with Xubuntu from daily use on my laptop and it's pretty lightweight but still easy to use and I'd been running it prior with the P106-100. I'm here now because I'm having a problem I'm kind of stymied by.
The system I'm having an issue with consists of:
Intel i3 4330 (not folding, mild under-volt to save power but stable at about 1 volt)
Asus H97M-Plus
8GB DDR3 1333/1600 running at 1333 (I might pull the 1333 and just run the 1600, wasn't sure how much system RAM I'd end up needing with two cards running)
An unbranded but probably Manli P106-100
A PowerColor Red Dragon RX580 8GB
A 600W Gold PSU
A case

The issue I'm having is that the RX580 keeps getting a work server of 192.0.2.1 and obviously not getting work. I've read that this is a work server you get when the card can't fold for some reason. I have the amdgpu-pro drivers installed, clinfo shows both the P106 and RX580 as OpenCL 1.2. The P106 is running CUDA and doing great! The RX580 was formerly folding in a Windows machine earlier this year so I know it DOES work with F@H. I've restarted several times and deleted and re-added the slot several times. I'll grab the log file in just a moment, I need to log onto the other PC to grab that and edit/paste it into this post. Is there anything else besides the log file that would help get this figured out?

Edit: Mark this as solved! I finally hit the right string of words on Google and got the result I needed, I had to edit a file to change the user to root for fahclient, now the RX580 is picked up and folding away.

Welcome to the F@H Forum Bitter,

I am glad that you were able to resolve the issue... more importantly, you shared what you did which would help in future searches! Glad to see that you got an AMD and Nvidia GPU folding in Linux :)

You stumbled on a workaround, but normally FAHClient does not need to be run as root. The actual fix is to add the fahclient user to the 'video' group, and on some linux distros that user needs to be added to the 'render' group. There have been a number of posts here on that change needed to Ubuntu 20.04 and derivatives.

A future release should include support for Ubunt 20.04, but the current installer is better with 16.04 and 18.04.
