FahCore_a8; over than 6 cores reduces speed

Post by mmm »

Console client 7.6.13; core A8 0.0.6; 2xE5-2609 (2x4Core); win 2008r2

Last time I have noticed many tasks for Core_A8 and very low PPD for it. I have been testing it by reducing cores and I have seen working speed with 8 cores was less than with 3 cores. So how I can fix it?

Welcome to the F@H Forum mmm,

Can you please post the log file? Ensure you include the first 100 lines which will inform us of what the system configuration is and what the client settings are. If you require guidance, please view this topic: viewtopic.php?f=24&t=26036

Please note that CPU folding is sensitive to background tasks too. If you're using applications which use 1 or 2 CPUs, then folding with 8 CPUs would produce less PPD than folding with 6 CPUs since the other 2 CPUs are for application usage. Once we see how your client is configured, we might be able to provide some suggestions :)

Hi. Before posting my question I have backed up a client and calculate the same steps with different CPU quantity (--cpus=N) from 3 to 8. I have used two identical machines for the tests to reduce the time. Below logs for 3CPUs and full 8 CPUs. As you can see in each case time for one step is about equal.

3 cores

Welcome to Folding@Home!

This is a 4 core, 4 thread, Sandy Bridge CPU. You must have two of them. There will be some slowdown communicating between them.

Have you tried setting two CPU slots with 4 CPUs each?

Since there are two separate processors in these servers, communication between them will be affected by the NUMA settings in the BIOS and Windows. However changing them may or may not make a difference with Core_A8. The currently released version of the core has one of the NUMA related settings turned off due to a problem encountered during testing before release. A future revision may be released with that enabled again. So the current core will work well on multi-core single processor systems, but not quite as well on multi-processor systems.

May not be "quite as well" but still a significant increase on A7 for my 24/56 and 32/56 slots (system 1 - twin xeons) ... even more so when tested (without client) on a 54/56 slot - which was blindingly quick :)

Neil-B Your Xeons may be new enough to use AVX2, mmm's CPU is older and just does AVX.

Disabled NUMA gives +57% boosts on Core_A8 and 5-7% on Core_A7

Does the old "cpu-affinity" config setting do anything?

What do you mean under "old"?
I ran Core_A8 on 4 cores (--cpus=4). Win2008r2 shared by itself all the workload mostly on 4 last cores (4-7) and rarely slight workload was on the 3rd core.
After by hand binding to the cores 4-7 I noticed no changes. The results I have not written down.

Nope, it doesn't do anything.

The OS is responsible for scheduling and can choose what CPUs to use. It is good to know that it works on your system. On my system, (Windows 10 64-bit 2004) it is all over the place and ended up using process lasso to ensure that it uses those specific CPUs.
