Full only run at 75%

Post by LetterC67 »

My laptop is running F@H now. I set the power to full but it shows only 3 cores and CPU Usage is about 70-80%. Reinstalling couldn't help :(

I will guess (in absence of a log) you have a cpu slot set with -1 as the default for how many cores which (iirc) will default to total cores-1 to leave a cpu core to service a gpu slot ... as this is standard install behaviour reinstalling won't change it.

You can use the Advanced control to configure the slot to 4 cores ... if you need guidance on that ask and post some instructions ... that should increase your overall usage ... with a laptop you may well want to keep an eye on the temperatures.

Generic CPU instructions

In the taskbar to the lower right of the screen, you should see a F@H molecule icon, click it (you may need to click an Up Arrow to see it ^)

The second item in this menu is Advanced Control, click it

On this screen to the left is a Configure button, click it

Now you get a screen with a Slots tab, click it

On this white field should be a cpu item, click it and then click edit

By default F@H set the number of CPUs to -1 meaning let the software decide.

You can enter any number from 1 to the number of threads your CPU supports.

If you have GPUs, F@H reserves one CPU per GPU to feed it data across the PCIE bus.

F@H has difficulty with large primes and their multiples number of CPUs.
7 is always large, 5 is sometimes large, and 3 is never large. Try to choose a number that is a multiple of 2 and/or 3.
2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 9, 12, 16, 18, 24, 27, etc. are good numbers of CPUs to choose.
5. 10. 15, 20 etc may work most of the time. Other numbers will bite you

Type the number you want, and click save.

Ta JimboPalmer ... I was about to search for one of your other posts with these instructions to copy it over :) ... Much more comprehensive than anything I could write - Thanks

Also, if a WU was downloaded with a CPU thread setting of 3, it can be run at a lower setting, but will not run at a higher one. The next WU downloaded with a setting of 4 will be able to use all 4 CPU cores.

Interesting...
Probably not the place to ask this, but: Are WUs customized for a client's settings, or is it simply that because the client was only reporting 3 cores and therefore only eligible for max-3-WUs?

When a WU starts, you can read in the log how many CPUs it will use. You can see -np and some number or -nt and some number. That is the max CPUs that WU will use.. As Joe_H says, you can turn it down
