Can't Connect to Assignment Servers, but No Errors?

Post by bhughes89 »

Hey guys,

Brand new donor here with issues connecting to the Assignment Servers. I know the servers are crazy saturated, but I want to make sure my settings aren't messed up.

My FAHClient seems to be getting stuck at connecting to the Assignment Servers, but I am not receiving any feedback in return from either the server or my client. The log just kind of stops after the "Connecting to" lines, and nothing else is logged afterwards even if I let the client run for 12+ hours.

Does this just mean the server hasn't gotten back to me yet?
Or does this indicate there is an issue with the network setup on my end?

Here's what I've done to get started:
  1. Installed FAH using Express Install
  2. Created an identity complete with passkey
  3. Made sure Windows Defender is allowing fahclient to communicate thru the Firewall
  4. Restarted my computer several times in the hopes that something changes
Log for reference (verbosity level set to 5):

Hi and welcome to the forum! Thank you very much for all the detailed information. We're being flooded with newcomers on the forum and all that information and preparation is really really helpful.

It's odd that your system can't seem to reach the Assignment Servers. They are under heavy load, but you should still see some timeouts or other clues in the log. There isn't, so my guess is that an anti-virus or anti-malware flagged those requests as suspicious and tore down the network socket or something like that. That's just a guess on my part though. What antivirus are you running?

Thanks for taking the time to reply, and thanks for all that you guys are doing!

I am only running Windows Defender Firewall, and I have ensured (to the best of my ability) that FAHClient can communicate through the firewall - here's a screenshot of my firewall's allowed apps.

I've also verified that my router's firewall is turned off.

However, I did notice that WAN blocking is enabled in my router's settings. Could that be causing problems?

WAN refers to the Wide Area Network, like the Internet. I assume that it's referring to blocking connections from the Internet from coming into your LAN. If it still can't connect after you have turned off the router's firewall, its clear that the problem is somewhere else and I think you can turn that back on. I'm still not sure why it doesn't seem to connect out or produce more messages.

I would like to add one note, changing the logging verbosity to 5 provides little to no extra useful information. The default setting of 3 gives all the information needed for troubleshooting.

I've also had problems getting an assignment. I have two computers running F@H, one is CPU only and the other is CPU & GPU; both have hung on the "WS Assignment" phase. It's been this way since March 21.

Is something amiss? Are my humble desktops now redlined as being not sufficiently powerful? Or have we cured all known diseases and can go back to Bitcoin mining?

Short answer: No,no and no.
Longer answer: it would be more helpful for us if you could copy/paste your log, using the "code" brackets.
What you should be looking for and would represnt normality is something line this:

Code: Select all

23:07:53:WU02:FS01:Connecting to 65.254.110.245:8080
23:07:53:WARNING:WU02:FS01:Failed to get assignment from '65.254.110.245:8080': No WUs available for this configuration
23:07:53:WU02:FS01:Connecting to 18.218.241.186:80
23:07:54:WARNING:WU02:FS01:Failed to get assignment from '18.218.241.186:80': No WUs available for this configuration
23:07:54:ERROR:WU02:FS01:Exception: Could not get an assignment
23:07:54:WU02:FS01:Connecting to 65.254.110.245:8080
23:07:54:WARNING:WU02:FS01:Failed to get assignment from '65.254.110.245:8080': No WUs available for this configuration
23:07:54:WU02:FS01:Connecting to 18.218.241.186:80
23:07:55:WARNING:WU02:FS01:Failed to get assignment from '18.218.241.186:80': No WUs available for this configuration
23:07:55:ERROR:WU02:FS01:Exception: Could not get an assignment
So, as long as you connect to somewhere and simply not getting assignments is the normal state.
If you don't get connections, puase the client, wait 20-30 seconds and press fold/start again. This, in effect, re-starts the search for an assignment server and helps in case your client keeps "knocking on the same door" without success.

Is that normal status?
Is something wrong with firewall setup?

Probably only use the pause/restart folding approach if you really feel the need and your wait time to next attempt is in the hours … The assignment/work servers are flat out at the moment (they are increasing capacity/throughput daily) and even though you may not be getting WUs others will be … If everyone uses this approach then the servers will be DDOS'd (by friendly fire) so even though it is hard patience is probably best at the moment from a F@H perspective.

Thx for fast reply.
Ill wait, till something happens or different advice from F@H admin.

But as a generell approach it would be better to have some response like "Server maintenance" or "try another time" instead of "HTTP_NOT_FOUND" ;)

@AnonymABFolder, Can you try accessing the following URLs in your browser?

http://18.218.241.186:80
http://65.254.110.245:8080

Do you see a page that looks like this? Some security software/ routers block requests to IP addresses and this can cause the error you're running into.

@Anandhanju

I tried both. And for direct browser access it was not working. But I fixed the settings in the Router (filterlists).
Now I can access this pages via direct IP, but still the tool is giving following log:

Code: Select all

HTTP_NOT_FOUND

AnonymABFolder, that looks like a firewall or antimalware issue to me. I suspect that something along the line doesn't like the request to a raw IP address and is falsely returning a 404 Not Found response back to the software. My firewall operates a bit differently and resets the connection, causing a different error message, but I think it's the same idea here.
F@h is now the top computing platform on the planet and nothing unites people like a dedicated fight against a common enemy. This virus affects all of us. Lets end it together.

There's another possibility but this is strictly a guess. FAH uses explicit IP addresses on some communications and DNS specifically on the initial connection to the AS. This may matter.

When I ping assign.stanford.edu and when I ping 65.254.110.245 I see two different results. Apparently I reached the same server but ping recognizes that I asked for it two different ways. Maybe the client is checking rDNS.
