No Folding Has Started

Post by timoteo1234 »

I recently downloaded F@H and want to begin folding right away. I havent gotten a work unit yet, and nothing appears to be happening. How can I make sure I am helping as best as possible?

Comp: Dell XPS13
OS: Windows
Not overclocked

Without the first couple of pages of FAH's log, I can only guess.

Intel GPUs are not supported, so you'll be restricted to CPU folding. Laptops generally have trouble with FAH's tendency to generate a lot of heat so you may need to adjust the performance, but that shouldn't stop you from contributing.

Your firewall is probably blocking internet connections from FAHClient. (Temporarily disable the firewall to confirm if that's your issue.) Then add an exception to permit that.

Connections may not assign work immediately due to congestion at our servers. They've been inundated with people wanting to help. Be patient and ask for help if you need it.

I am having servers without WUs also problems-- folding is intermittent for me. I get 2-3 WUs every 24 hours now, so let your client continue to wait please. any data asked for I will try to provide, but common pattern is trying to continue to get a WU frrom the same pair of servers and there is now wor server shown on FAHControl's log or status pane. the log shows that the units I did got uploaded, and my points show the increase they should from uploading them.

Grrasshopper here, applauding FAH work people for the betterness that now exits from the state of folding a week ago.

FYI, the "same pair of servers" means the same Assignment Servers which are responsible for finding a Work Server that can supply you with a new WU. See https://apps.foldingathome.org/serverstats.
(New servers are being added and often don't show up on that list immediately. There's a new cloud-based AS.)

"No WUs available for this configuration" just means that the server doesn't have any WU for your system right now, that is, the second when your client asked. It is a very frequent occurrence these days, apparently, as so many people want to help that the servers can't generate WUs fast enough.
You'll notice on your log that the interval between trials gets longer. After a while, it can be hours between trials. You can then pause the folding for a minute or so and restart the process, so that your client asks for WUs more frequently again.

65.254.110.254 is FAH1 assignment server.
the second IP in each error pair does not list.
the azure.cloud servers are listed as WS type, Workstations on the cloud?

Hey guys, i'm posting here 'cause i don't know if it's the case to open a post just for this and i think is somewhat related. I have no problem receiving WU, but i noticed that often, only with the longer WU on the gpu, the WU stops after some period of time. Sometime after minutes, sometimes after hours. Is it normal or there's something wrong in my setup? Since i started donating i rolled back all overclocking for stability and i left only the power limit on the gpu maxed out, just because i have enough cooling headroom.
Thank you for you work.

Francesco-- can you run a memtest64 RAM test on your main RAM? RAM errors can cause big WUs to abort.

Also getting no activity (Windows/Cable). Trying to determine if this is like John_D above (connecting fine but no jobs exist on the server) or if I am having a firewall or network issue:

Re: No Folding Has Started

So, i have some news. I played a bit with it this morning and i got through some.
First of all, i did some loop with memetest64 and it went fine. But i noticed that on the 3rd or 4th loop my screen went black and the video driver resetted. So i DDU the gpu driver and retried folding. Seemed to be fine, then, again, the wu stopped. With no hickups or anything this time. So i monitored the gpu while it was working and decided to rollup everything in afterburner, i left only my fan curve. Again, everything seemed to went fine until it didn't. At this point i decided to close monitoring the log in the advanced control of FAH and i noticed many things. First of all i have 2 WU that it tryes to upload continuosly, those are 2 of the failed GPU workunit, it listed somenthing like 60 attempts, and one other now that it was doing more recently:

WU04 is new, but WU01/02 i saw from precedent log files it tryed continuously.
I'm wondering if i got to just erase the folders of the works in the work directory...
Then, returning to the principal issue, i analyzed the log files to find the moment the WUs was stopped on the gpu and i found that everytime i get this message:
07:56:53:WU00:FS01:0x22:Completed 140000 out of 2000000 steps (7%)

As you can see it asks me if my system is overclocked but it really isn't. At the end he tries to send the result and in many cases it does, but in the case of WU01/02/04 it couldn't and continue to retry.
In the log files i can see that the message
08:01:16:WU00:FS01:0x22:Bad State detected... attempting to resume from last good checkpoint. Is your system overclocked?
08:01:16:WU00:FS01:0x22:Following exception occured: Particle coordinate is nan
comes in different percentages, in the case i posted is 9%, but in other case is on 50%, or 32%...it seems to be random.
I tryed many configuration with afterburner to see if the overclock really has an impact (just playing with power limits, priority on PL or temps and voltage, i never touched core clocks or mem) but the issue continue to show up.

I'm pausing my gpu because i don't want to send partial WU or corrupted ones, but i really want to fix this problem.
I hope this is helpfull.
Again, thank you for your time.
