Razer Blade and Razer Core GPU Issues

Hello, I am having some issues with getting my GPUs to work. I am using a Razer Blade 2016 and with the Razer Core with GTX980 Ti, and the cpu slot works fine, but the two Graphics Card fail. Before I started using the Core, the Laptop and built-in GTX970M worked flawlessly. The Razer Core interfaces with the laptop through the Thunderbolt 3 connector, and I have not seen whether there is support or not for "external graphics docks", so I am wondering if this may be the issue.

So far I have tried:
reinstalling the FAH Client v7 - did not work
pausing one of the graphics cards - did not work

Am I missing something critical here?

Welcome to the folding support forum.

Use of an external GPU through your Thunderbolt dock should work as long as the client detects it and the proper video drivers are installed. The BAD PlatformID does point towards problems with the video drivers. Which version do you have installed?

Since this is a laptop, you may be restricted on which video drivers you can use. However usually you will need drivers downloaded from nVidia and need to install the driver and OpenCL support. Lack of OpenCL is the probable source of the error message, and support for it is often left out of downloads from MS and manufacturer OEM drivers.

Thank you for the reply!

I have the latest drivers, and I keep them updated through the GeForce Experience application. I tried your suggestion of downloading the drivers directly from nVidia, but to no avail. I still am getting the same failures with both graphics cards.

I tired reconfiguring back to the onboard GPU (GTX 970M) without the other card, and it was giving me an error in regards to connecting to a GPU. I think this is because it was expecting to see the other GPU and it was no longer connected. This forced me to reinstall the FAH client, and now it is working okay, albeit with the onboard video card.

So to sum up, if I have the Core plugged into the laptop with the two video cards and the latest drivers, both cards fail. If I only use the onboard card, then it works.

This also brings up a concern that if you unplug the Core (TB3 graphics enclosure/extender), then the FAH client stops functioning properly. I am a new user and I do use the express installation/default settings, so perhaps there is a way to configure the client to work when one of them is unplugged. I also noticed that in the log something about the cards not being configured. Any idea what that means?

I tried plugging in the Core again after pausing the work, and I did not try to reconfigure anything (I also did not restart the system) within the client. So it is only looking at the internal graphics card (the 970M). When I unpaused the work, I got the failure error again.

I guess this special usecase with external gpu docking may have a bug in folding software. The platform id size is somehow bad when external gpu is docked. I fear the development team also has no laptop with external gpu docking, so they will not be able to reproduce the issue and fix it.

Maybe using linux may work better or not but I don't know if that is an option for you.

Maybe you want to try poem@hoem using boinc because it also uses OpenCL and this way you can verify when poem@home is also not working then it is a OpenCL driver issue. If poem@home is working fine on both GPUs then it is a folding@home issue only.

Thinking about this some more, you might be running into a similar problem to what has been reported by owners of laptops with dual GPU's. Some only allow one GPU to be active at a time, so any control that causes the GPU used to switch will error out the folding work. Some have reported getting proper drivers to install as well.

What might work is to uninstall the folding client, hook up the system the way you want to fold and install the video drivers. Then install the the folding client and see if it detects the second GPU correctly. However I expect you may run into problems every time the external GPU is disconnected from the Thunderbolt port.

You could also run FAHClient.exe --lspci
The client uses something similar to enumerate what hardware is present. However, that may not work for a Thunderbolt port.

7im's suggestion to run the lspci option is a good one. The key lines indicating whether or not you're going to see a failure are in the early part of the log ... and you don't need to attempt to start GPU folding until you see something OTHER THAN

It should also be noted that if you're eventually successful, WindowsUpdate is likely to re-distribute Microsoft's version of the drivers without CUDA and without OpenCL support.

Moreover, if you do get FAH to recognize the external GPU and start folding and then later undock the system, restarting FAH will discover it has a GPU which doesn't match your hardware and it will discard the partially completed WU because it has detected that your system cannot finish the assigned project.

In other computers, it's common for the bios to automatically disable the integrated GPU if it finds a discrete GPU present. (The built-in GTX970M is likely to be disabled when it finds the GTX980 Ti.) In a configuration like that, I'd love to reserve the 970M to drive the monitor and dedicate the 980Ti for folding, but I haven't been able to get that to work.

I've had great success with the 970M without the external GPU. When I want to use the external GPU for gaming, I pause FAH, dock to the GPU, restart my computer, and its good to go. When I'm done, I unplug from the GPU, restart the computer, and then unpause FAH. This saves the WU I was working on and continues working on it.

I'm going to try some of the above suggestions over the next couple of days after I finish these last couple of WU. I'm going to try to connect to the 980Ti, disable the 970M through device manager, and then reinstall FAH. I want to see if it will work with just the 980Ti and only recognize the 980Ti. I'll report back when I get some results.

Okay, so I tried disabling the 970M and reinstalling the FAHclient. The FAHclient still configured with both GPUs (slot 01 and slot 02), however, I noticed that it had the CUDA 5.2 correct. So, I paused folding on the 970M (which was disabled) and it accepted the work on the 980Ti and its running like a beast.

Thinking that somehow magically this solved all the problems, (seeing both GPUs in FAHclient) I re-enabled the 970M and the unpaused it. I got the badplatformid error and bad work unit errors (see log below). I'm gonna take a break for tonight, and I'll try the lspci tomorrow. So far I'm able to run either card as long as I only do one at a time, although I haven't tried pausing the 980Ti and unpausing the 970M (I'll also try that tomorrow).

I have managed to get both GPUs folding:

Last night I started receiving the error from the cpu that there were no work units available on the assignment server (it is an intel i7 and was configured as default to run with 7 cores). Digging through these forums I saw the posts regarding this issue where the cpu is unable to get WU unless it is derated down to 6 or less cores, as I understand it. In that explanation I saw someone mention that the 8th core was dedicated to the GPU, hence that is why there are only 7 available. So I configured my cpu to use only 6 cores, and it started functioning (i.e. downloading WUs from the assignment server) again. Along this line of thinking that there was now an undedicated core on the CPU, I added another GPU slot.

What happened when I enabled the GPU slot was that it created a duplicate on the GTX 980 Ti (not the 970M, which is still disabled). I thought this was sort of strange, but it was downloading and working on another WU, so I left it. I came back about 30 minutes later and my computer had gone into an unresponsive sleep mode (this has happened before), and so I had to reset my system. When it came back up, it now identified that extra GPU slot as the 970M (which is still disabled), and started folding on both the 980 Ti and what appears to be the 970M (which is still disabled in device manager).

I don't have any problems for now, so I'm gonna leave it as is and see if it keeps going. I am curious though if it is possible to do two WU simultaneously on the same GPU...that 980 Ti is MUCH faster than the 970M (almost twice as fast).

FAH will attempt to use (nearly) 100% of either the GPU or the CPU with a single slot. If I somehow manage to create slots that use more CPUs or more GPUs than are available, more than 100% of the resources will be allocated. The WUs will compete with each other and LESS work will get done as each one swaps in an out more frequently.

Ordinarily, the client will not allow you to create a second slot for the same GPU, although apparently you've found a way around that intended limitation. I'm surprised that the client didn't recognize that the 970M couldn't accept any work.

I recommend you select FINISH and allow either of the WUs to be completed and the result uploaded. Then either remove the other slot or figure out how to get each GPU to work (concurrently) on it's own assignment.
