Hello, I am new to this "folding" stuff... i successfully managed to install the client on my laptop, but i want more. I am a system administrator at a local highschool, and i want to join your folding with all our computing power, but i need some help. The school uses a linux server as DHCP&NAT and in the local network i can't get any WU. I think this is because on port 80 and 8080 we have forwarded other webservers but if a use a secondary connection, it works like a charm. Any help? Sorry for my bad english.

First and before everything else: make sure you have approval from your manager in written thst you are allowed to do so. beside being a request from the EULA for using the folding software it also protect you from negative consequences in case your school don't agree. Keep in kind that folding cost energy (and potentially stress components like fans).
Play safe !

they asked for a "demo" on 5 pc's, to see the impact on the resources (ram+cpu) the log is from my "personal" server, which is powered 24/7, but it work's only if i connect to the internet directly...

Try to ping those ip addresses or even better tracert to see until where you come.
I would not expect that those port forwards you mentioned will impact the connection; but that can answer the person responsible for the NAT setup.

By the way: how did you managed to double the lines in the log ? Seems you run two instances ? Same time ? That is rather not normal and could cause trouble too.

Update:

Saw one more hint in the log that you run two processes at the same time on the same working files.

Code: Select all

10:57:37:ERROR:WU00:FS00:Exception: Failed to remove directory './work/00': boost::filesystem::remove: The process cannot access the file because it is being used by another process: ".\work\00\wudata_01.dat"
Maybe uninstall the setup and reinstall; make sure to follow the setup guideline for windows: http://folding.stanford.edu/home/guide
I don't have much experience with folding under windows; others might can help specially with running as service or not. And why exactly you might ended up with two instances the same time.

looks like after a server restart(power failure) everything works fine :)) Can i sign on every pc with the same donor name? and is a way to hide the tray icon? so regular users wont be able to stop it?

Good ! Welcome to the fold.

You can use the same donor/passkey combination on as many instances you want. Just make sure to not have a typo ;-)

The question with the tray ... No idea ... No windows experience on my side.

TrayIt! saves precious Taskbar space for minimized windows. For each application which applies TrayIt! it creates a small icon in the System Tray. (System Tray area is located near the Clock). When application's window is minimized this icon represents the application on the Taskbar instead of the regular "button" in the Taskbar.

It is particularly useful for background tasks you typically keep
running on your PC all day long like your favorite E-mail client,
Real Player, etc.

If you're not going to be using the GPU for folding, you can do a service install. Folding will start at boot and there will be no tray icon.

I, too, recommend a service install. The log that you posted reports that there are no GPUs that FAH supports, and if that's representative of the other hardware, that should not be an issue. If any of those machines happen to have a supported GPU, you'll produce a lot more science, but the machine will be much more susceptible to screen lag. Installations that use only the CPUs do an excellent job of reducing FAH's resource utilization when someone is using foreground resources so resource conflicts become undetectable.

ok, thanks for ideas, but the old problem remains, the power failure affected the server on which the 8080 port was forwarded, so that's why FAH worked, i tried reinstalling it, no change... can i set up the comunication port on other than 8080 or 80? i can't move the actual 8080 server :D and if a have multiple clients on the same subnetwork (after a router) how can I manage to portforward to each client? can i use a "main" who can receive the WU and the "little" clients get the WU from the main local server?

FAH supports a proxy server for two-way communications, transforming the connection into ports 80 or 8080 before the messages arrive at Stanford. FAH does not support caching WUs locally and redistributing them.

Do you have, or can you create a proxy server that manages communications with the outside world?

i can do that, but i don't know how :-/ for the moment i will use the secondary internet connection for testing only, and if it's approved will come back after i finish my exams (i am a student and finals are coming).
