FAHClient not starting on Win 8.1 system

Post by mkg_2006 »

My FAHClient is not starting on my Win 8.1 and if it go to C:\Program Files (x86)\FAHClient and run the FAHClient.exe with or without administrator privileges make no difference, from what I can tell, to the functionality of the program. When I try to run the program I get a command prompt console with all of the commands it has to go threw and it does not go away I even tried the HideConsole.exe program to hide and still no difference. Also when I run the FAHClient.exe I can not view it's configuration threw the web client or the FAHControl.exe. I will say that if I run the installation without uninstalling it, it will work and see the last work unit I was working on and my credentials. So I am at a bit of a loss as to how to manually start the program to make it work since it is not auto running.

I have listed the log file found at C:\ProgramData\FAHClient which does not reflect me trying to run it today, it only show when I ran it yesterday, which is when I reinstalled it. I am also posting the log file found at C:\Program Files (x86)\FAHClient after the log file found at C:\ProgramData\FAHClient. The log file at C:\Program Files (x86)\FAHClient does reflect me running the program today so I do not know what kind of error is going on.

Thanks

Re: FAHClient not starting on Win 8.1 system

Post by bruce »

Welcome to foldingforum.org, mkg_2006

Did you install FAH "just for me" or did you choose "for everyone"? There are some problems with the "for everyone" install so probably the simplest solution is to reinstall using the "just for me" option.

C:\Program Files (x86) should NOT contain a log. Microsoft's standards expect that both /Program files directories contain only installed software which is supposed to store it's working data elsewhere. The only reason that the log is there is that you gave yourself Admin permissions and started the program there. [Normally, working data is kept in %APPDATA\FAHClient, but you don't need to look there because FAHControl.exe provides everything you need.]

It is possible to start the program manually, but it's best to use the shortcut provided when FAH is installed.

Under normal circumstances, that shortcut is invoked whenever you log on and HideConsole is part of that script because FAHClient.exe is designed to run unseen in the background. The foreground components are "Web Control" (aka http://folding.stanford.edu/client/) or "Advanced Control" (aka FAHControl.exe) which, along with the Viewer are expected to be your interface with FAHClient which is expected to be running in the background.

If you insist, starting FAHClient manually consists of three steps. HideConsole redirects the output to NOT go to the screen. Then there is a CD command to change the local directory to the place that the working data is stored (normally this is cd %APPDATA%\FAHClient) and then FAHClient.exe is invoked using the full path to it inside of Program Files. If you so start it manually, the only means of controlling it or monitoring what is going on is to invoke FAHControl or WebControl so starting it manually is not recommended.

I installed it for everyone so I will try and reinstall it just for me and I do not have a shortcut for some unknown reason hence why I tried to start it manually. So I am going to uninstall then restart and then reinstall then restart and then see if the client is still working right.

I tried to re install it as I mentioned and restarted it and still not able to run on start-up and I still do not have a desktop link to start FAH. I do not know if that is due to me not logged in on my administrator account, because I standard log on as a non administrator and elevate what I need to.

If you have a nicely laid out command for me to make a batch file or to properly tell a shortcut what to do so I would have a shortcut that would be great.
I just would like to have it running properly on my laptop.

Thanks

You need to install the Folding@home client using the same user that is going to run the client. When you uninstalled did you include data? If not, you need to do it again to remove all data for the client and do so as the same user that did the install.

When you install just double click on the installer as your regular user ... i.e. do not select "Run as Administrator" ... Windows will pop up and ask if it's okay to run the program and you just say "yes" as your regular user that's going to be running the client.

Shortcut:

Click on Start > All Programs > FAHClient, right-click on Folding@home and select Send to Desktop ... i.e. create a shortcut

A previous version of the installer had a problem when installing as a user, but then elevating to admin do the install. It would put the startup shortcut for Folding@home in the Administrator's startup folder instead of the User's startup folder. I don't know if this was fixed or not in the current version, but if you find Folding@home shorcut in the Admin startup folder, you can copy that link to your User's startup folder. Then it should work better and start automatically at login.

I am running Windows 8.1 so there is no normal start menu however I am using classic shell and for whatever reason it does not show up there or the start screen. I have installed and uninstalled it with me logged in as my non administrator account and giving permission to run the installation with my administrator account. After I had removed the client the last time I ran ccleaner to hopefully remove everything that would linger and cause problems, but if you want I can remove it again and then check the folder that I know where it stores the data and remove the remains manually.

Thanks

I did not see your post 7im until after my last post uploaded but I did look into what you had posted and so I tried to copy the files from the admin location and did not work at first so I uninstalled FAH. I then restarted and logged on to the standard user and then switched to the administrator and installed it on administrator account and selected to install it for anyone using this computer. I did that since later in the options it has C:\ProgramData\FAHClient for the data directory and then I copied the Administrator's account start menu FAHClient folder and the startup shortcut.
That seem to have worked so thanks everyone, hopefully that trick might help someone else as well.
