Completely new to F@H, several basic questions.

Post by tlm »

Hello everyone. First of all, I'd like to say a huge thank you to the team for a project like this. And now, to the question at hand, I have no idea how to set this thing up for my hardware properly. I am running it on a laptop (Lenovo G580), the specs are:
  • CPU: Intel Core i5-3320M, Ivy Bridge @ 2.60GHz.
  • GPU: NVidia GeForce GT 635M
  • RAM: 8GB, DDR3 @ 798MHz
  • OS: Windows 8.1.
If any more detailed info is necessary, I'll be glad to provide it. The machine is primarily used for browsing the web, talking via IM programs such as Skype, e-mailing and watching movies, and occasional gaming.

My questions are as follows:

1. Which preset should I choose? So far, I'm running on Light, as Medium and Full seems to spin the fans up a lot and it scares me. Is this normal? Can I leave it running on those presets for long periods of time? There's no visible performance impact.
2. If I want to run some performance-heavy apps (i.e. games), should I pause F@H, or just switch it to Light?
3. I can't seem to be able to get a passkey, the page just keeps loading forever.

Thanks in advance, hope I'm not asking anything that's too obvious.

Hello and welcome, tlm!

Are you currently using the Chrome app or the downloadable client? If the latter, do you have slots for both the CPU and GPU?

To find out which preset with which you're comfortable, one suggestion would be to set up a temperature monitoring program. RealTemp has a nice interface and works with Intel CPUs. This won't tell you your graphics card's temperature if you're folding with that (only available in the downloadable FAH client, because the Chrome app uses only the CPU right now)

I'm sorry that I can't answer all of your questions, but the info above will be a good start for anyone else to help out with your questions. Again, welcome!

Hello and thanks for your reply. I am using the downloadable program for Windows ("FAHClient") version 7.4.4, configured to start on login. It does have a GPU slot, but it's currently inactive, because I am in Light mode. What temperatures are considered acceptable for my processor/card, though? How would I find out?

Welcome to foldingforum.org, tim.

A well-made laptop SHOULD have a cooling subsystem that allows heavy use of all hardware, but the fan(s) will be working hard, and they still might be not quite enough. You can help by making sure there is good airflow to the underside of the laptop, perhaps by setting it on bottlecaps, Running a less than maximum settings is also a viable possiblity. Even with temperature measurement software, it will still boil down (no pun intended) to a gut feel of whatever you're comfortable with. "Warm" is a good sign. "Really hot" is not.

The passkey website should work, but there's something going on with the servers right now, so try it again later.

Whatever you choose to donate will go to a good cause.

If you run the Chrome app, I would leave it running when gaming. If you're running the V7 client and folding with your GPU, you probably won't want to. For the V7 client, leaving the CPU slot running is not that different that running the Chrome app.

Thanks, Bruce. I have a question about the Chrome app, though. It seems it's configured to receive smaller work units or something along those lines, because with the Chrome app I can complete one unit in under an hour, but the V7 client tells me that the unit I'm currently on will take several days. Is there a particular reason for this? Or is my V7 client somehow underusing my CPU?

The Chrome NaCl client has much smaller WU's than the v7 client. I believe it is by design since there are problems with low-end HW and part-timers completing v7 WU's on time. The NaCl client was was their solution, in my opinion.

By design, both the NaCl and v7 clients will always be under-using the machine's resources on anything less than full. The v7 client however has a lot more flexibility built into it because you can configure its settings and bypass the slider bar settings. The NaCl client only has the slider bar.

If you are worried about temps, may I suggest that you get a free temp monitoring program off the internet. There are several good ones that will show temps real-time in the systray. As to a reasonable temp, notebook processors are normally designed for higher temperatures than desktops. Your processor specs say up to 105C and with that in mind I would not be uncomfortable at 75-80C to maintain some headroom. For longevity of the notebook, I would prefer it if the fans stay under 80% their max speed for they tend to last longer if they do not run at 100% for extended periods. Fan failure can be catastrophic but CPU's and GPU's have built-in solutions for overheating -- To protect themselves they will automatically down-clock till they are no longer to hot. Thus, I judge percent fan speed more important than temperature readings. The same utilities than monitor temps can normally be used for fans too.

As the number of atoms N in a protein increases, the complexity of the calculations increases at a rate proportional to some power of N between 1 and 2. Projects have a very wide range of complexity. Donors provide a wide range of hardware. To maximize the overall results, there needs to be some degree of matchimaking of the two.

Even simpler proteins need to be analyzed and that analysis may take many months, The analysis can be broken down into a series of short time segments, but you can't analyze any segment until the previous segment has been completed. Project delays accumulate when someone doesn't complete their assigned segment promptly.

Projects for NaCl (Chrome) are intentionally broken up into a series of shorter segments whereas projects for V7 are generally made up of longer segments with the need for fewer upload/download cycles.

If your system is going to run (almost) all the time 24x7, use the V7 client. If your system is going to spend an appreciable percentage of the time being restarted or sleeping, run the Chrome client. That has a lot to do with what happens to work that's started but not necessarily completed promptly.

Thanks again, bruce. I am going to settle on the V7 client, because I don't like having an extra browser tab open, and because my computer is on almost all the time as it is. However, I seem to be experiencing an issue here, the progress went up to almost 10% and then randomly jumped down to 6%. Should I try to increase the checkpointing rate?

Post the log and we'll comment. (See the signature of my first post.)

I would not adjust the checkpointing rate.

I'm not sure how much use this will actually be considering all the tweaking I've been doing to figure out what setting to run it on. I see one "error" line, though.

You're absolutely right. Every time you tweak things, some work has to be repeated and any projected completion estimate is invalidated. Pick ANY settings (the default settings are really pretty good) and let it run for half a day. Don't change anything unless you have a good reason to. If you feel you need to make a change, do so and let it run for another half day. Then post the log again.

There's a reason the WebControl management console only has two things you can adjust:
1) Power = {Light, Medium, Full} and
2a) Fold When = {While I'm working, Only When Idle} plus
2b) Stop folding.

Over a period of about 4 hours, you accomplished maybe 2.5 hours CPU processing.

Well, by tweaking I mostly mean moving the slider about and seeing how the temperature/fans react. Either way, I'm keeping it running for now, all seems to be good. A couple final questions: What do I do if I need to shutdown or restart my computer and can I keep folding if my internet connection disappears?

Moving the slider causes the client to change the number of cores it will use- at best this will mean resuming from the last checkpoint, at worst restarting the WU from scratch.
What do I do if I need to shutdown or restart my computer
Just shut it down as normal. When you restart, the client will pick up the last checkpoint and carry on from there. If you've got pause-on-start set to true you'll need to unpause it of course.
and can I keep folding if my internet connection disappears?
Yes, until the WU finishes. But you won't get any points, or another WU to process, until the connection comes back up and the completed WU can be uploaded and a new one requested. The client will handle this automatically, you don't have to do anything.
