I need a shortcut while on USER account to run Folding
I am the admin and the user.
I use this computer as the user 99% of the time.
What hoops do I need to jump through to be able to start up the client and run Folding as a User. I need the/a Shortcut. I have searched here for a solution and have found none that work.I have the latest version. I want to install on a drive other than C drive so I used the custom install and chose that everyone can use it. I would highly prefer that I have to give it admin authorization when I am on the user account.
I simply (I hope) need the shortcut that will open the client while I am the USER. It seems reasonable that I am not the only one wanting to do this, why is it a problem? Sorry if I am the problem lol
Any help is greatly appreciated
Glen

Re: I need a shortcut while on USER account to run Folding
Normally, you would install the fah client as any user, and select the all users install option. They you can run fah as any user on that computer.
However, there is a 3 year old bug in the V7 client where the shortcut to start FAH is only added to the Admin account, not all accounts. Copy the Folding@home shortcut in the Admin startup folder to the Startup folder of the User account.
If you need specific folder names, you'll need to post what OS you are using.

Re: I need a shortcut while on USER account to run Folding
I've now used all install options with the same results. I can NOT Start Up this program as a USER. This has been a long time problem if I remember right as I have tried using Folding several times before. Perplexed!

Re: I need a shortcut while on USER account to run Folding
Thanks for the reply. I have done that. I am on Win 7 pro 64
I can open the client that way but I can't do anything with it. user is grayed out as is everything else
EDIT. I am NOW finding the "startup" folder. I think this has been my error
EDIT Still no joy. I still do not have the function to open the program like I have as Admin via the Start/programs.

Re: I need a shortcut while on USER account to run Folding
Folding is running while I am using the User account now but I have no access to it. I want access to and control of it.
Re: I need a shortcut while on USER account to run Folding
Anybody should be able to run FAHControl or WebControl within whatever restrictions you've configured. There should ALWAYS be only one copy of FAHClient running. It functions primarly as a background service to do the scientific work, not something that you need to manage except by way of the Control application.
Does you hardware include a supported GPU or do you plan to fold only with your CPU?

Re: I need a shortcut while on USER account to run Folding
Ok I have it working and have access to it when I am the user account. I had to copy the entire FAHClient Folder from the admin acct to the user acct. Now I have all the same abilities as the admin. I'll set a password in Folding to off set it not having a UAC now.
On windows 7 look in C:\Users\admin and/or user name\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs
Copy the entire FAHClient Folder from the admin to the user account. Restart, then on the user account look in START/All Programs/FAHClient and you will have the exact same abilities as the admin. That's actually pretty simple.
Maybe someone can make a sticky with that solution. There are other similar queries with no real solutions that I was able to find.
I do want and need control while I am in the user acct. I use this computer for many things and having the CPU and or the GPU being used extensively is not always good for some of the things I do. Playing a game while folding can tax even a high end 780 gpu. Not being able to, at the least, Pause Folding is not an option. I want to fold but it can't be the only thing I do. I'm sure I am not alone on this.
Thanks for the help 7im and Bruce, You pointed me in the right direction with the "Startup Folder" not the installed folder that I was messing with.

Re: I need a shortcut while on USER account to run Folding
This is not an ideal solution.
As I said before, two copies of FAHClient must not be run concurrently. Either copy will use all unused computer resources to process the downloaded WU.
Suppose you plan on running FAH when you're logged on as "user" and you happen to also log on as "admin." A WU will be downloaded into each of two different local files. Bad idea. Who is going to finish the WU that was started in the other id when you log out of either one?
To be run by everyone, the exact same file needs to be writable and shared by everybody who might run FAHClient and all shortcuts need to point to that same directory, not a copy of it Ideally, starting a second copy of FAHClient will result in a conflict for which user gets exclusive access to the files that you copied over and that second instance of FAHClient must be forced to crash.
Another potential conflict is for GPU resources. Microsoft has decreed that the GPU can only be used by the user who is logged on, not by some background task. Thus running FAH from two different userids is a real challenge. The best solution I've found for this is to install FAH to run only from which ever "user" that uses the computer most of the time and not use the "for everyone" installation option. It will run as a hidden task and controlling it will not be an issue.

Re: I need a shortcut while on USER account to run Folding
I Seldom log in as the admin. I now have these three processes running while I am the user
FAHClient.exe
FahCore_a4.exe
FahCoreWrapper.exe
I think I understand what your saying about running as admin and concurrently as the user. Does the above show that is happening now?

Re: I need a shortcut while on USER account to run Folding
No, it does not. That's exactly what I would expect if you fold only with your CPU.
I suggest you remove the files associated with the admin ID, especially the one you copied rather than moving. If the shortcuts belonging to admin are never going to be used, removing them is a good idea. That will leave essentially what I recommend -- an install for "user" only.
The "for everybody" option has had a number of bug tickets, some of which have been fixed and some of which probably are too hard to fix. Maybe that option should simply be removed.
In FAHControl, on the System Info tab, what are the last several lines. (This can also be found near the top of the log.) Do you have a supported GPU? If so, do you plan to use it?

Re: I need a shortcut while on USER account to run Folding
I've uninstalled/reinstalled and "Moved" the Folder from the admin's Start Menu/Programs to the user's corresponding folder as well as the Folding@home shortcut in the Startup folders. There is nothing in the admin folders now.
Everything seems to be working correctly.
Is this what your looking for?

Some things don't make sense to me such as the AMD64 reference above ( I am using Win 7, 64) and just before the above it mentions "Platform: win32 XP".
When I set Folding to medium or full it maxes out my gpu and it runs at 70-72°C. I have a very breezy case but I'm not fond of running even those lowish temps for hours on end. SO no I won't be using the gpu that much.
EDIT I am deciding that I do NOT want to run the GPU at all. Is there an option to disable the GPU but still run the CPU at medium or full?
EDIT2 I have removed the 1 gpu slot in the FAHControl/configure/Slots. I hope that is the best option for me to use. It seems to be working as expected.
I also added pause-on-start true to the Extra Clients Option under config expert. I will sometimes not be able to run the computer all the time and will have to shut down while still working on a unit. I understand this will let me shut down and on reboot I can resume the same unit(?) or at least not lose anything(?).
I am referring to this post bollix47 --- viewtopic.php?f=61&t=25839
"You can right-click on the slot in FAHControl (aka Advanced Control) and select Finish at any time before the next work unit downloads. Doing so will finish and upload the current work unit without downloading a new one. The slot will then enter a Paused state. Right-click and select Fold when you wish to get a new work unit and continue folding. The latest client version has buttons for the above functions so you can just highlight the slot and click on the appropriate button.
There is also an option named pause-on-start which when set to true will stop the client from automatically downloading a new work unit after a system reboot or client restart which some have found helpful in your situation. This can be added to the Extra Slot options:
Name: pause-on-start
Value: true"

Re: I need a shortcut while on USER account to run Folding
I tested by simply pausing the unit and did a reboot and hit Fold to continue working on the same unit.
Behold I think I have it set for my particular use.
Once again thanks for correcting me and getting me pointed in the right direction with a professional, intelligent and gentle touch. Well done!!
Sincerely,
Glen

Re: I need a shortcut while on USER account to run Folding
There's no association with those settings and being able to resume work after a reboot. You can do that 99.999% of the time. with the regular client and 0% of the time with the NaCl client.
pause-on-start means after a reboot, you will always have to go to FAHControl and click FOLD. Leaving it at the default value of FALSE means it will automatically be in the same state of processing that it was before the reboot [Folding or Paused] without any action on your part.
By default, your GTX 780 will fold when the computer is idle (like an invisible screensaver) and suspend processing when you're using the computer. The GPU contains a much faster processor than your CPU so it's a lot more useful to FAH (and earns points more quickly.) Both/Either can run at any one time. The choice is up to you.

Ok thanks Bruce!
I haven't even looked at the "points". I am doing it for the science. I may not contribute much but a little is better than nothing
